User Agent: Mozilla/5.0 (X11; Ubuntu; Linux x86_64; rv:68.0) Gecko/20100101 Firefox/68.0
Steps to reproduce:
When there's new mail in a folder like Inbox, the folder name is displayed in bold with a new mail count. But the same doesn't happen with Junk folders.
Actual results:
Spam detection isn't perfect and because Junk folders don't automatically show new mail count, one has to remember to manually check these folders or risk missing mails incorrectly flagged mails.
Expected results:
Junk folders should also automatically indicate new mails like other folders, so one doesn't have to remember to manually check them for incorrectly flagged mails.

This sounds like a support issue.
In your Preferences > Security > Junk settings do you have "Mark messages determined to be junk as read" enabled?

No, I have not enabled "Mark messages determined to be junk as read". I can see any unread Junk mail in bold, but only after I open the folder. Seems to me the Junk folder is not monitored or updated the same way the Inbox is.

It seems to be working on my end. I'm on Thunderbird 60.8.0 and I'm using IMAP and have see the ticker go up twice doing normal operations.
JK,
What version of TB are you using?
What email protocol is the account having the issue connected to?

I'm using the same version and protocol, but this isn't problem with a particular version or email service. I've had the same problem in previous versions too, and irrespective of the email service (Google, Yahoo, etc.)
Maybe I found what the problem is. In the Junk folder Properties, "When getting new messages for this account, always check this folder" is disabled by default. I've enabled it now, will check for a day or two and confirm if it solves the problem.
Enabling "When getting new messages for this account, always check this folder" does seem to solve the problem. I didn't know about that setting before, but would expect it to be enabled by default.

Thanks for the update.
