User Agent: Mozilla/5.0 (X11; Linux x86_64) AppleWebKit/537.36 (KHTML, like Gecko) Chrome/76.0.3809.72 Safari/537.36
Steps to reproduce:
Opening the preferences.
I am running Arch Linux with Gnome and a dark theme.
Version 68.1.1
Build ID 20190927102139
User Agent Mozilla/5.0 (X11; Linux x86_64; rv:68.0) Gecko/20100101 Thunderbird/68.1.1
OS Linux 5.1.21-1-MANJARO
Actual results:
The check marks and some text (e.g. "Auto save every ...") are white on white background.
Therefore one can not tell if a box is checked or not.
Expected results:
Check marks should be dark color

We use the styles from Mozilla. Please could you test this with Firefox? If the same happens we move this bug to the correct component.

It's not the case in Firefox. I added a screenshot for Firefox.

The weird thing is that the TB prefs are black/white and the FX ones black on grey. Do you have some special settings applied to TB?

There is a setting in "Colors" to use a set of four fixed colors. That of course obliterates the UI more or less.

It was the color settings. Thanks for the help.
I had to change them to fixed colors some months ago, because some emails would change the font to a light gray, but keep the white background. (This happens only for some emails, for some reason I do not understand. Maybe dark mode of the OS? It's the same whether I use the dark or light them of TB. The emails look normal in the web interface of the mail provider though.)
The fixed colors worked okay for emails and most of the rest, but apparently not for the check boxes.
When I disable the fixed colors ("Override the colors ..." set to "Never"), the preferences menu works as expected (light background with black font, and check boxes work too). But I have the problem with the light font on white background in emails.
When I enable the fixed colors with "Use system colors", almost everything in TB is dark gray background with light font (Emails, TB menu, preferences, and also the check boxes). So this seems for now to be the best solution. Will see if I will run into other issues with this setting.

Still not the ideal solution, some Emails and parts TB are not displayed the way they should. So if someone has a better way dealing with this, I would greatly appreciate any help.
Perhaps this bug should be re purposed as an enhancement to have Thunderbird detect when the background color and the text color are the same and actually do something about it, like use an Xor of the background for foreground and display an error message in the status bar that the user setting are broken.

On TB 78 checkmarks with a blue checkmark icon that doesn't use the text colour and all text work for me with black text and white background set. I close it as WORKSFORME.
If it's an issue with the colours it would a toolkit issue as the same happens on FX.
