On today's xkcd (https://xkcd.com/2221/), I noticed that the alt text on the image in the tooltip is cut off, see the attachment. Latest nightly on macOS with WebRender enabled.

(Not sure if the right component, please move if inappropriate.)

I can reproduce as far back as 2013-11-15, much before that and I can't load the page because it forces https and only offers to use ciphers that that old of Firefox doesn't understand. Easiest way to reproduce for me was the load the page on retina screen, mouse over, get tool tip, drag window to external non-retina screen, mouse over. Repeat once or twice to get truncated tooltip.

This is widget-specific afaict, right?

Component: Layout: Images, Video, and HTML Frames → Widget: Cocoa

Saved the page locally.

first the tooltip goes from being rendering well to getting rendered on the wrong screen, range for that
http://hg.mozilla.org/mozilla-central/pushloghtml?fromchange=dac5700acf8b&tochange=cb573b9307e5
Probably bug 794038

And then the tooltip renders truncated, range for that
http://hg.mozilla.org/mozilla-central/pushloghtml?fromchange=739f20de3c1e&tochange=b7fab17d30b7
Probably bug 814434

Oh, self-dupe. :(

I have a feeling this has been fixed recently (in the last few weeks or so) -- at least there's been a bunch of times where it was working correctly whereas before it would basically always fail.

That's probably because you were seeing something like bug 1664670 which was fixed recently. Unfortunately it caused a regression, bug 1686751.

To clear up any confusion that there may be: bug 1592416 landed a patch for all popups which resulted in a regression where tooltips were getting cut off (bug 1664670). The portion pertaining to tooltips of that patch was reverted in bug 1664670 to fix this regression. Bug 1686751 is now just a followup to the original bug 1592416 to apply the same popup fix to tooltips without causing regressions.

Has it been 2 years already? I am still seeing this on an almost daily basis, in-content as in the screenshot [1], but also for chrome-ui tab titles. I find it impossible to replicate, because it happens randomly for me and hovering the element again after leaving it consistently renders the title correctly.

This screenshot was taken on a non-Retina, second monitor on macOS 11.3.2 in Firefox Dev Edition 88.

Hovering tab titles for a while eventually the issue showed up again. I also found in-content titles cut off again when trying long enough.
As a side note: before I could take this screenshot there were a few titles which cut-off for a brief moment before rendering in full.

This screenshot was taken on the main, retina display on macOS 11.3.2 in Firefox Dev Edition 88.

Haik, adding a need-info here in case you had any thoughts.

Flags: needinfo?(haftandilian)

Sorry for the bug spam. Reading the closed tickets I found a way to replicate both examples above on the retina display*:

Steps 1

  1. On a retina display open a new tab to https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Romanization_of_Japanese#Differences_among_romanizations
  2. In the first paragraph hover over Nihon-shiki
  3. Then hover over Hepburn

The second title, for "Hepburn", is longer than the first title, for "Nihon-shiki", but keeps its previous width.
Same is true for tab titles.

Steps 2

  1. On a retina display open https://duckduckgo.com
  2. Open a second tab with this ticket https://bugzilla.mozilla.org/show_bug.cgi?id=1592206
  3. hover over ddg tab until the title shows
  4. hover over the bugzilla tab

The bugzilla tab is cut off after the length of the previous ddg tab title's length.

*I could not replicate it on the non-retina display again. There it is very intermittent.

There's more than one tooltip bug. This bug has been around for a while. But there are other ones that have been introduced and fixed since this bug was filed. Specifically I'm thinking of bug 1689682 and bug 1701070 which landed in 89. Could you maybe see if your problem is fixed in 89?

@Albert, could you let us know if you can reproduce this on Nightly (89)?

Good news! No, I can't reproduce it on the current Nightly.
I also found out this only happens if a second monitor is attached to my MBP.

That's great. Closing this bug as a dupe of bug 1689682. I have not verified this particular configuration, but 1689682 fixed a problem on multi-monitor configs where the scaling factor is incorrectly applied to the size constraints causing the tooltip to be too small in some cases.
