The more-options button gets badged when there is an update available. The badge is missing now since the button is no longer position: relative, though.

Verified on Windows Pro 10 64-bit and macOS Catalina 10.15 with FF 72.0a1 (20191114214957).
"Update Add-ons Automatically" option was disabled in about:addons Wheel Cog menu. After clicking on "Check for Updates" the user can see the avilable updates in a side panel. The extensions available for update display a badge near the extension more options button, which is visible for Enabled, Disabled, Available Updates, Allowed or not to run in private mode, from Extensions panel or extension details.
Opening "more options" menu the Update button with icon and badge are also listed and when updating the extension from Available updates.
After performing an update the "update" option and the badges are no longer displayed.
