For some time I haven't been setting MOZ_LOG_FILE so my logging output goes to stdout. I just tried, on a recent TRUNK, setting

export MOZ_LOG_FILE=/home/gene/tb.log

and nothing goes there when this is set. I finally found that the output is going to /home/gene/tb.log.moz_log instead as described here: Bug 1574882

At first I thought this was a bug but instead it is something that should be documented on the page we refer users to for logging: https://wiki.mozilla.org/MailNews:Logging

Thank for filing this, Gene! I think this points out that I should also update the https://developer.mozilla.org/en-US/docs/Mozilla/Debugging/HTTP_logging similarly. Note that this change was widely announced on dev-platform and left for discussion first.

Thanks, I've edited the https://wiki.mozilla.org/MailNews:Logging wiki page.

There's a minor typo too right below where you added the .moz_log clarification:

The log file is written over every time you re-launch the mMzilla thunderbird application.

In addition I would suggest adding this to "Missing Log File" section:

  • With version 70 and later the filename defined by MOZ_FILE_NAME will have ".moz_log" automatically appended.
