User Agent: Mozilla/5.0 (X11; Linux x86_64) AppleWebKit/537.36 (KHTML, like Gecko) Ubuntu Chromium/78.0.3904.108 Chrome/78.0.3904.108 Safari/537.36

Steps to reproduce:

Thunderbird 68.2.1 and 68.2.2, Ubuntu Linux 18.04, 64 Bit

Two days ago, Ubuntu upgraded its Thunderbird package from 60.9.0 to 68.2.1.
The result was, that Lightning was still active, but not usable any more. (Details see below and screenshot.)

I know about the issues with Lightning being packaged separately, so I took care that this is not the issue.

I also switched to the official Thunderbird 68.2.2 tar.bz2 packages to ensure that the issues are not caused by packaging problems.

Unfortunately, I was not able to properly try Lightning with a completely new Thunderbird profile, as apparently it's not possible to create mail accounts in Thunderbird 68 (Bug #1600493).

Actual results:

After the upgrade, Lightning technically was still working and showing events in the grid view.
However:

  • No calendars are shown in the calendar list any more (see first screenshot). So it's impossible to reconfigure the calendars and/or enable / disable them.
  • All events, no matter from which calender they are, are shown without any colouring in the grid view. This makes it impossible to see from which calendar they come.
  • No events are shown in the "Upcoming events" sitebar (see second screenshot).
  • New events cannot be added to a calendar.

Expected results:

Lightning should show all configured calendars in the calendar list, and should colour the events in the grid view depending on their source calendar.
Also, the "upcoming events" sidebar should show upcoming events, and it should be possible to add new events to the calendars.

You may very well be experiencing bug 1588516. A new version with that bug fixed will be released this week. In the meantime you can work around the bug by restoring the toolbar of the calendar tab and of the tasks tab to the default arrangement.

Mh, the symptoms sound very similar, but I cannot remember adjusting any toolbars, and I also have not seen this error log in the error console:

JavaScript error: chrome://calendar/content/calendar-chrome-startup.js, line 175: TypeError: button is null

I'll still try this if I find time, or maybe I'll just try the upcoming Thunderbird version, but I fear I'm bitten by a different bug with similar to same symptoms.

@Geoff: No, it's a different issue. I just tried Thunderbird 68.3.0, and the calendar is still completely unusable.

See the attached screenshot - I covered most of the calendar window to hide private / confidential data, but you can clearly see that the calendar list to the left is empty and the calendar entries in the month view do not have any background colors.

Do you have the Hamburger three line AppMenu button in the Calendar tab?

It will be on the far right side of the Calendar toolbar.

Huh, that is very strange, it appears you don't even have the mini-calendar in the top left. I see you're having problems with a new profile, but if you skip the account set-up you should still be able to see if Lightning is working properly.

I got your messages and will reply to them. I'm just really "under water" currently and do not currently have the time to play with this and check the buttons. (I reverted to TB 60.9.1 and always have to copy my profile around to avoid accidentally messing with something. However I'm just having the idea to always start TB 68 with the profile manager, that would be "thunderbird -p", right? Should make testing easier.)

In any case, I do have the mini-calender on the top left if I'm not totally mistaken, it's just not visible in the cropped screenshots I attached. Sorry for the confusion. I think you can see its "weekday shading" in the original screenshot I attached as attachment 9112735 [details].

I just upgraded to Thunderbird 68.5.0, which fixed the issues.

However I don't seem to be able to resolve this issue as "Fixed in 68.5.0" - can anyone here do so, please?
