Actual results:

N/A - Feature Request

Expected results:

Please add "Folder" as a predicate for use in defining message filters.
(This used to be available in the filtaquilla add-on long ago.)

Use case:
In one particular folder, I want to delete all messages with a subject that starts with "RE:"
If this were applied globally, it would be a disaster.

I have a bunch of similar cases which would affect tons of false positive matches in the wrong folders.

Another example is deleting all messages which contain "call" in the subject.
I want to delete messages from political causes asking me to make phone calls - not those from family, friends, and business contacts (which are already filtered into different folders.)

This cannot be solved by making a new filter manual-only because I routinely run "Apply Filters to Folder" on many folders which would cause these folder-specific manual filters to be inappropriately activated.

I think you want bug 294632.

That's quite similar, but not the same. All I want is a folder predicate for message filter rules. For me it would mainly be used in manual rules applied to messages already in a folder - not necessarily when they arrive there.

Also, the way I've asked for it, it will not affect current users in any way unless they explicitly select the predicate. Everything else stays the same.

It is my sense (not knowing the code at all), that my request would be much easier to code - especially since the FiltaQuilla add-on already provided this feature. It's analogous to adding another case to a case statement rather than altering the flow of the whole filter system.

Also, I do not have an issue with multiple accounts sharing filters. I have two IMAP accounts which do not have any duplicated filters.

Maybe the reason that bug is 15 years old is that it requires a whole lot more work than what I am requesting. It is almost 100% certain that it will never get implemented.

That bug was certainly very popular (and still didn't get implemented!)

James Kent (the author of FiltaQuilla) appears to agree with me:

"I still think that the goals of most users could be met by a simple folder search term in the short run. I doubt if it makes sense for mail to follow the same system as newsgroups, where filters can be defined on folders as well as servers, as that adds too much additional complexity to all filter users without much (if any) additional benefit over a simple search term."

One comment suggests the use of the sieve editor which is something I'd like to learn, but I have no idea how to configure that into my email system.

One more use case:

I sign a lot of political petitions via email. When I do, I often get email responses asking me to spam my friends with these petitions - which I do not do. The subject lines start with "Thank" and I had a manual filter that deleted them all from my Politics folder. I can't use that any more because many other messages stored in other folders, including purchase receipts start with the same text and the run filters on folder button runs all filters and so would delete many messages I need to keep.

This is one of the more fundamental features that would improve the usability of thunderbird by so much.

I could not fathom why it has been missing from thunderbird for so long (In the past there multiple add-ons to work around the archiving problem but with the new versions most of them aren't actively developed/supported any more)

And this affect Version 78.1.1 (32-bit) too.
