User Agent: Mozilla/5.0 (Windows NT 6.1; Win64; x64; rv:56.0) Gecko/20100101 Firefox/56.0 Waterfox/56.3

Steps to reproduce:

Open a Thunderbird 68.3.1 (32 bit) and open any email message that has a Word document attached. Then double click on the dot doc file listed at bottom of message. Word opens but then can't find the file. However, if I right click that same file and save it to the hard drive Word has no problem opening it. This is not the behavior that has been normal up until the last and latest update.

Actual results:

After the last and latest update Thunderbird fails to link the attached file correctly so Word can not find the file but the file is not corrupt and can be verified by saving the attached file to the hard drive.

Expected results:

Prior to the last update I could double click an attached Word document and Word would open and then open the attached file. After the last update that stopped. Word opens but is unable to locate the file.

Does the file name have spaces?

I'm pretty sure it does ;-)

Yes it does have a space in the filename. However I got another message at the same time from the same person that had a PDF attached and that file had a space in the name but Adobe Acrobat has no problem opening it. It just appears to be Word documents that have the problem.

Well, there is bug 1601905 comment #44 (quote):
I don't want to spoil the New Year but I have 72.0b2 and I can't open Word, Excel or powerpoint files even if there are no spaces. Adobe pdf files continue to open perfectly. I get error messages about invalid directories and if there are spaces, files not found for the bit(s) after the space..

There might still be spaces in the overall path. What is the path to you're profile? You can get it at "Help > Troubleshooting Information", Profile Folder, Open Folder, or via about:profiles.

You could try a Thunderbird Beta or Daily version to see whether it fixes the issue. I still think it's related to bug 1601905.

Also, is there any error message in Word which mentions the name of the file it tries to open?

This is the first error that Word throws when trying to open the file. I notice that it has the filename as WYO.doc when the filename is WYO Swap Shop current.com it apparently stops reading when it gets to the first space until it gets to the dot prior to the file extension.

This is the second error that Word throws when it can't find the file. This is the path to the swap file that it expects to find but doesn't find.

Thanks for the additional information. With spaces in the file name this is a duplicate of bug 1601905. This will be fixed in TB 68.4 which is due for release this week or next.
