As stated by Jared here, clicking on the X button of a multi-selected tab should only close that one tab to maintain parity with Chrome.

Note:
Triggering Ctrl-W should still remove the whole selection.

Down voting this.
If button click and keyboard shortcuts behave differently, it will confuse users.

Thank you Kazumasa for your feedback. I admit it can be confusing and maybe we don't necessarily need to match chrome for this, especially since users should already be familiar with how things currently work. For now, let's wait for more feedback here.

I guess bug 1627159 counts as additional feedback? :)

Yes, It does.
Now, should we wait for more feedback? Do we have another platform (something like a voting platform) that can facilitate feedback collection?

Unfortunately there isn't a good voting platform or place for us to get feedback on a change like this. We basically have two choices to make:

  1. follow Chromium
  2. Have the button close the targeted tab and keyboard shortcut only close the focused tab.

There still exists the context menu item "Close Tabs" to close the full selection of tabs. In the case that all tabs are selected, we will still need to decide if we should close the whole window or just the tabs and reopen with a blank one (essentially doing browser.tabs.closeWindowWithLastTab=false in this case).

I only just learned of this behavior a minute ago when I tried it. In my use of firefox, the way I've gone about closing multiple tabs when I have them selected is through the right-click menu. I suppose the expected behavior for me personally is that the close button on a tab closes each tab, and that if I want to close all the tabs I have selected I go through the right-click menu.

Another idea for dealing with close tab button which would also improve situation where its too easy to accidentally close all selected tabs:

  • hide the close box of the focused tab when multiple tabs are selected

Several times I've closed selected tabs by accident while dragging tabs around. Never have I thought to close the selected tabs with the close box, instead right-clicking so I could verify by way of the clear menu item that it was closing all N tabs.
