Meta bug to track the Releng work.

Depends on: 1608882

thanks for getting this started. I forgot I had some old tickets started. The plan has somewhat changed [multiple times!] since so happy to close my original bug and merge into this one. whatever you prefer: Bug 1598373 - [tracking] fennec end of life

No problem! It turns out there's a very small overlap. Let's use bug 1598373 to track everything related to the end of Fennec and keep this one to migrate Fennec users.

Looks like we're missing a sops and/or cloudops change. I backed out your latest commit from production-pushapkscript to unblock #releaseduty-mobile.

Fixed SOPS, re-pushed master to production-pushapkscript. Things should be good now.
Johan is PTO this week, cleaning the NI for him as well.

Bug 1608874 - Remove Fennec as a shippable product r=rail,Callek

ESR Uplift Approval Request

  • If this is not a sec:{high, crit} bug, please state case for ESR consideration: Prevent people from inadvertently shipping Fennec.
  • User impact if declined: Huge. We may break release users who have already been migrated to Fenix.
  • Fix Landed on Version:
  • Risk to taking this patch: Low
  • Why is the change risky/not risky? (and alternatives if risky): Low risk, this is isn't part of the final product. It just removes the taskcluster code that enabled promoting/shipping Fennec
  • String or UUID changes made by this patch: None

You have not reached 100% yet. As of 09/25/2020 there is no way to install Firefox Fenix on an Android mobile device via direct APK download. There are some people out there (including me), who do not want to use/install Google Play on their otherwise privacy-friendly mobile devices. (Privacy-friendliness and open source are the two reasons for me being a Firefox user since 2003). But at the moment, Google Play seems to be the only way to install Firefox Fenix.

Please see discussion in: https://support.mozilla.org/en-US/questions/1305577

If I understand #1663735 correct, solving #1614763 would provide APK downloads again. In my opinion as a user, it would be okay, to download the APKs from https://archive.mozilla.org/pub/mobile/releases/ or https://github.com/mozilla-mobile/fenix/releases, as long as those places are official Mozilla sites and APKs are provided reliable. (At the moment, releases on github have APKs bundled only in ~20%)

Hi pa-dev,

You're right, I misspoke. It's not crystal clear when I now read the whole bug, but I implied we migrated Google Play users. I totally understand why you disagreed with comment 22, I wasn't explicit about what I meant. I apologize.

I understand your concern and I agree: direct APK download should be supported. It has some value to Mozilla too: this makes regression testing easier. We didn't have enough bandwidth to provide builds on archive.mozilla.org before Fenix went live. Mozilla decided to implement it later. A new problem has come since that decision, though: Mozilla laid off many people last month. This has notably impacted direct APK downloads.

I am currently advocating for making this a priority. Your message and the support.m.o link you provided help me in this regard.

I have some good news in the meantime: starting Fenix 82, APKs are automatically uploaded to Github releases. It's tracked at bug 1648785 and I plan to finish it up this week. You can follow the archive.m.o uploads at bug 1614763.

I hope this helps.
