&#65279;1. Download the plug-in from http://www.mozilla.org/oji/MRJPluginCarbon.html 2. Copy to /Library/Internet Plug-ins 3. Launch Mozilla 1.0 4. Visit a URL such as the Java version of Yahoo Messenger: http://messenger.yahoo.com Mozilla crashes: "unexpectedly quit", before anything on the page becomes visible (pretty much as soon as it sees the <applet> tag). OS: Mac OS X 10.2 (Jaguar) 6C115 Mozilla: Build 2002052918 I found that I had something called "Java Applet Plugin Enabler" and "Java Applet.plugin" also installed, which I'm not sure about the origin of, however removing MRJPluginCarbon enabled Java to work using these two plug-ins. Disabling "Java applet Plugin Enabler" and "Java Applet.plugin" and re-enabling "MRJPluginCarbon" restored Mozilla to its crashing state. Also disabled my Mozilla profile (~/Library/Mozilla) to check that it was not a profile problem. The problem occurred again with a fresh profile. It kinda looks like a Jaguar-specific problem, but have not been able to 100% isolate it as I'd have to blow a lot of software away to go back to 10.1. Another machine has OS X 10.1.5 with Moz 1.1a (2002071108) on it and seems to work with MRJPluginCarbon installed. I updated to Moz 1.1b and the crash remained, even with MRJPluginCarbon disabled, until I found another copy of it embedded inside the 1.1b application bundle. Disabled that copy as well and things got working again, using the Java Applet.plugin/Enabler combination. So, to summarize: OS X 10.1.5, Moz 1.1a, MRJPluginCarbon - works OS X 10.2, Moz 1.0, MRJPluginCarbon - crash OS x 10.2, Moz 1.0, Java Applet.plugin/Enabler - works OS X 10.2, Moz 1.1b, MRJPluginCarbon - crash OS X 10.2, Moz 1.1b, Java Applet.plugin/Enabler - crash

There doesn't appear to be any TalkBack module for Mac OS X. (Is there?)
No, there's no TalkBack for Mac OS X. Mac OS X has a built in crash data collector. See [http://www.mozilla.org/mailnews/osxinfo.html], particularly "Enabling Crash Reporter in OS X *10.1*."

Isn't it 'expected' that Java on anything post 1.0 will crash? I know I expect it to crash or hang Mozilla. A good deal of Mac OS X, Mozilla 1.0+, MRJ plug-in crashes exist. Even Mozilla 1.0 had Yahoo Java problems (bug 154183). Granted this should work. This bound not to be Jaguar issue. I suspect if you install 1.1b or a nightly on your 10.1.5 machine, you will come across similar results.
Okay, I think I've worked out what's going on here. This is my take on it FWIW: Java Applet.plugin is the actual functional plug-in for Java applets in Mac OS 10.2, and MRJPluginCarbon is basically useless. Java works in 10.2 as long as the Java Applet.plugin is available, whether or not MRJPluginCarbon is. If Java Applet.plugin is absent, things fall apart: if MRJPluginCarbon is present, it looks like Mozilla will try to use it, but then Mozilla crashes. If MRJPluginCarbon is not present (ie: neither are present), we get a "broken plug-in" symbol (subsequently offering to download a plug-in from the out-of-date Netscape repository). In 10.1, however, the reverse is true. Only MRJPluginCarbon is needed. Java Applet.plugin is not native to this version of Mac OS X - Apple doesn't install it in 10.1, it's only new in 10.2. This is why the only conditions that appear in 10.1 are "Applet works" or "Broken plug-in", and these are only dependent on the presence or absence of MRJPluginCarbon. If Java Applet.plugin is manually added, it doesn't have any effect. The twist in Mozilla 1.1b is that MRJPluginCarbon is loaded into the Mozilla bundle, so for users it would generally be considered "always available"(good on 10.1, but bad on 10.2 if Java Applet.plugin is absent), no matter what is in the Internet Plug-ins folder. If it is extracted from the Mozilla bundle, and we work only with the items in the Internet Plug-ins folder, the experiences between Mozilla 1.0 and 1.1b are exactly the same.
