remove sidebar from addressbook
putterman says: "remove it from the address book and make it hidden by default
in mail."
The only place sidebar makes sense (in mail) is the 3 pane, when you use the
sidebar and the addressbook panel like "contacts" in IE. It's useful for
composing messages.

from experience, when we do this, we need to take care to add back in the
splitter grippy and to make sure the directory tree pane doesn't get into a bad
state when director tree pane is very narrow.

mscott brings up a good point about sidebar in mail.
the only useful sidebar for mail is the addressbook sidebar panel (like outlook
express's contacts).
instead of doing that with sidebar, just but the UI for it right in. (like
blake did with his new compose window.)
Instead of "View | Show/Hide | My Sidebar", we'd have "View | Show/Hide |
Addressbook", which would be off by default.
I like this idea.

Do we think anyone might like access to any of the other sidebar tabs while in
Mail besides the AB? Like maybe their Buddy List?
after someone lands a spellchecker into cvs.mozilla.org, i might want a
spellchecker sidebar so that i don't have to use the painful spellchecker
dialog. beyond that it's mostly pie in the sky (and some might say the
spellchecker itself is pie in the sky).

I think the aim team is going to stop supporting buddy list in sidebar.

1) remove sidebar completely from addressbook.
2) handle scenario where user starts up with dirTree collapsed
3) select all and dir tree has focus, select all and focus results pane
4) code cleanup.

User comment here... I think removing sidebar from mail was a bad idea. I built
a custom sidebar which gives me status reports on my servers (automatically
refreshes every 5 min). Now there is no way for me to see this information when
i am using mail. Is it so hard to just make this a toggle-able action? Leave
it off by default if you want, but please bring back the sidebar to mail/news.
Its so bad for me I may re-install 1.1.
