current behavior
In earlier versions of Thunderbird (e.g. in Thunderbird 68.X), every time an email arrived, the user was notified. Since the later beta versions, only one notification is given that an email has arrived, until the emails have been read or deleted. If the incoming emails are not read or deleted, and another email arrives in the meantime, the user is not notified.
Steps to reproduce
- start Thunderbird and check your e-mail
- read and/or delete your emails.
- minimize Thunderbird and wait for a new email to arrive
Note: You can shorten the waiting time if you send yourself an email from another device.
Result: The user is notified that an email has arrived. - continue waiting until a second new e-mail arrives.
Result: The user is not notified that a new e-mail has arrived.
Expected behavior
The user should be notified each time a new e-mail arrives.

Ali, can you still reproduce? 80.0b3 just came out.

There are various reports, of varying symptoms. https://mzl.la/35HO6CS
Ali unfortunately seems to be gone
Please do not worry, I am still here. Currently I have very little time to respond to any requests, but I'm keeping track of everything. Of course there are also requests that exceed my authority.
Unfortunately, I can still reproduce the problem with Thunderbird 86.0 B3. This is not just about the sounds, but about the notifications in general. If an email notification was displayed, no more are displayed until the Thunderbird window is focused.

(maybe OT): What annoys me most is that the notification almost never actually shows me those 2 or 3 new messages which are really NEW, but will show a list of elder new messages instead, with no way of seeing what's REALLY new for this notification.

There's another bug for that. Ping is going to work on cleaning up how we handle notifications, and that includes what you mention which is very annoying indeed. This bug should disappear in the process.

Oh, that's great news. Ping, can you share the bug number?

There are a bunch of similar bugs, I haven't decided which bug to send my patch to, likely bug 375717. I'm still getting familiar with related code.

This should have been fixed by bug 210148.

I can confirm that this bug has been fixed with Thunderbird 87 Beta 2. The notifications now works as usual.
However, the sound for new emails still only plays once. If this is a new bug, I'm happy to open a new one for it.

Thanks for confirming. I'm currently rewriting the notification for all the three platforms in bug 715799, I haven't started the Windows part yet. Please help me test in a week or two, then file new bug if needed.
