searching for URL in search bar goes to that URL

User Agent: Mozilla/5.0 (X11; Linux x86_64; rv:68.0) Gecko/20100101 Firefox/68.0
Steps to reproduce:
I have the URL/address bar and a separate search bar (as God intended -- none of this one "not-Awesome-Bar for everything" stuff). When searching for an URL, instead of sending it to the relevant search engine, Firefox attempts to resolve the URL instead.
Actual results:
What Firefox attempts to visit the searched for URL. If it's a site that does not resolve, it gives the standard "Hmm. We’re having trouble finding that site.
We can’t connect to the server at xxxx."
This happens with:
https://www.
https://thisisnotarealdomain.thisisnotarealdomain
http://w
https://
www.mozilla.org
www.thisisnotarealdomain
This does not happen if one prepands the search term with a space.
Expected results:
Firefox should send the URL to the search engine, the same as any other text searched for in the search bar.

Sorry, does not happen with a plain:
https://
Also, I'm running 75.0 (64-bit), Ubuntu canonical - 1.0

Bugbug thinks this bug should belong to this component, but please revert this change in case of error.

I think this boils down to the various dependencies of bug 1180329, and we're actively working on it.

Note anyway that if you explicitly type a protocol, we'll never send it to a search engine for privacy reasons, so either you don't type the protocol, or you'll always have to prefix it with a question mark to force a search
