When using a screenreader, sutch as jaws and NVDA, press alt t to bring up the tools menu, uparrow for options, enter on it, and you'll see all the radio buttons, labled general, composition, and so fourth! NVDA, reads it very well, when navigating with your arrow keys, now when you do it with jaws, then it doesn't read correctly, and sometimes, when you navigate with your arrow keys, jaws says nothing! now when you open the options with jaws, it says table! then you can tab and shift tab, back and fourth, but when you do it with NVDA, then us blind people don't encounter this problem, whatsoever!

Okay, Rob and Alessandro, here's more steps, to reproduce this issue here, when you do it with NVDA, hit alt T for tools, then uparrow, one time, to where it says options, enter on that, and NVDA also says table, as well, and it'll start reading a bunch of things, it says themes, mail content, and so fourth! now once you shift tab, back to the list of radio buttons, NVDA, only says list clickable, so in that case, you're lost! so what you half to do, in order to get back to where you are, you half to tab all the way around, back to the top, and then, you'll land back in the list of radio buttons, and it'll say listbox, general radio button checked, instead of saying list clickable, when you shift tab, once in the options dialog box.
When us blind people shift tab one time, our screenreaders, should automatically say, listbox, general radio button checked.
So try it with NVDA, and if you's can download, and install a demo version of jaws2020, from freedom scientifics website, and you'll see the difference, between the 2 screenreaders, jaws2020, is compatible for 64bit versions of windows.

I've got an update on the bug, to reproduce this! I tried it with jaws2020, and this time, it worked! sometimes it does, and other times, it doesn't, you half to play around with it at times, in order for it to work. so their needs to be some improvement, with in the options dialog box, but other than that, the compose edit field, works superb!

Priority: P1 → P3

Hi Bob, if it works with NVDA, but doesn't work with Jaws, I think it's unlikely to be a Thunderbird problem.

FYI, this is how it looks: When you open Tools > Options, they will open in their own tab in the main window.
The tab is organized like this: On the left side, there's a vertical submenu (vertical tabs) with section titles: General, Composition, Privacy & Security etc. Activating section titles will show the section content on the right side, and the content will have it's own main title on top which generally matches the section title (although there are some logical problems with main and sub titles in the content sections).

Here's the good news for you: TB 78 has introduced a search box for preferences / options, which will get focus automatically when you open them. We search all options regardless in which section they are. So if you want to find options for start page, just enter "start page" as a search word and it will then only show options which have that string somewhere, including the "Thunderbird Start Page" option. I hope that will make things a lot easier especially for the blind, especially when you know what you're looking for, as you won't have to navigate much. With that, section titles should be much less relevant wrt this report.

Summary: problem with the options dialog box under the tools menu → Jaws screenreader sometimes doesn't read Options/Preferences section titles (General, Composition, Privacy & Security, Chat, Calendar)

Bob, is this still an issue when using 85 beta?

I'll look in to it, just give me a second, I was just busy, living by myself, for being totally blind, in my own apartment, I have responsibilities to accomplish, I haven't forgotten about you guys, whatsoever, let me look at this.
I just checked it, and it works the way it should with jaws and NVDA.
I was able to tab and shift tab, to the options dialog box.
Do you's have any other questions for me?
If so, please feel free to email me, and let me know.
