User Agent: Mozilla/5.0 (Windows NT 6.3; Win64; x64; rv:78.0) Gecko/20100101 Firefox/78.0
Steps to reproduce:
Two mail accounts configured and are displayed in the left pane.
Start Daily, choose anything except the topmost entry in the left pane - Inbox of the second account will do.
Close and start Daily (or restart as updates do).
Actual results:
The topmost entry account is chosen in the left pane.
Expected results:
Position in mailbox pane should be restored, as old versions did.
Not sure when this got broken, but version 56.0 certainly could restore the position.

Still opens to the last selected folder for me using:
Name Thunderbird
Version 78.0a1
Build ID 20200517105725
Have you tried safe mode? Help > Restart with Add-ons Disabled.
I tried safe mode, and it did not help.
Not even after manually deleting .xpi files of two disabled ancient add-ons.
It had to be deleted manually because "Remove" did nothing.
However, a fresh installation of Daily does restore folder position.

Thanks for the update.
Apparently the behaviour depends on the "Daily Start Page" setting in Options.
Checkmark fixes the issue; cleared checkbox returns the bug.
Either there a good reason for the observed behaviour, or this bug was closed too soon.
No answer was given in more than a week, so I decided to reset the status.
Additional information about the bug.
Start Page configured was the default one.
Uncheck "Options" -> " When Daily launches, show the Start Page in the message area"
Select anything below the first two lines in the folders pane - Local Folders will do.
Restart Daily.
If the default mailbox's server is dead, then the top line was selected.
If the default mailbox's server is working, then Inbox would be selected.
Apparently, it was expected that folder selection should not depend on the Start Page settings.

Assuming this is a regression. Unclear whether it belongs in Folders or Preferences

Seems to be related to Bug 1657044

Should be resolved now in Thunderbird 78.2.2 with bug 1629522.
