Steps to reproduce:
The initial purpose is to have a sync address book with Gmail, as most users use now Gmail and switch to Thunderbird later, or use Gmial on phone, computer, online. So this feature is critical in 2021 for a messaging client.
Until 68, the feature was ensured with GcontactSync.
Actual results:
As many plugins, this is no longer compatible with newest releases, and its author is alone so I dont know if he will update.
Result: without module, the feature just does not exist. Seems to be a critical problem in our world to lack such feature.
I hope you can have a look at this, either making the addon compatible, or implementing in TB such sync feature.

For 78 we have added experimental CardDAV support (bug 546932), which will allow connecting to the google address book. It doesn't work yet due to requiring OAuth2 support which isn't hooked up. But we're working on it.
Going to dupe this, since that is the solution for the problem.
