Steps to reproduce:

Installed Mozilla Thunderbird 78, configured a new mail address with STARTTL (imap:143, smtp:587) on IMAP and SMTP connection. Mailserver mount Dovecot 2.3.4 working flawless with all other clients.

Actual results:

Can't configure che account due to the following error (server log):

Jul 22 10:21:18 mailserver.xxxx.yy dovecot: imap-login: Disconnected (no auth attempts in 0 secs): user=<>, rip=a.b.c.d, lip=e.f.g.h TLS handshaking: SSL_accept() failed: error:14094412:SSL routines:ssl3_read_bytes:sslv3 alert bad certificate: SSL alert number 42, session=<wDGRbAOrK8Ff/7gw>

If configured with the associated certificate name server (mailserver.xxx.yy) it wotks.

Expected results:

Like in Mozilla Thunderbird 68 it should prompt a warning for the certificate exception and let use it.
