Steps to reproduce:

I merely updated to 78.0.1

Actual results:

Now if I click on a message in order to read it, I only see a blank panel. I've disabled all the add-ons and that doesn't help. If I go to safe-mode, then I can read them again.

Expected results:

After the update, things should have behaved normally, so I can read messages when I click on them.

Note: The other change I noticed after the update is that I now have a calendar with its icons appearing at the bottom and near the top.

Note: Right click and then "open message in new window" Does work. Only double-clicking yields the blank panel.

Maybe I should have mentioned that I'm on the RELEASE update channel.

SUMMARY: I'm on the TB 78.0.1 (32-bit) on Windows10 on the RELEASE update channel of TB. After the 78.0.1 update, I could no longer read messages by double-clicking on them, or by right click followed by "open message in new tab". But I could read them by right clicking followed by "open message in new window". When I couldn't read them it was because I was getting a blank panel. If I open TB in safe-mode (add-ons disabled), then I could read the message normally (by double-clicking). But manually disabling the (one) add-on did not accomplish this.
This is an odd, frustrating state of things and I hope I get a response here.

THIS BUG IS ESSENTIALLY IDENTICAL TO BUG 1353856 which appeared years ago but was updated 7 days ago!!

Discovered how to fix it. Somehow, in Options / Reading and Display,
"Open messages in" was bulleted as "a new tab".
If I change that to "a new message window", the problem is cured!
Thanks to the writer in BUG 1353856!

Bug 1653168 also seems related, though not exactly the same, and harder for a civilian to understand.

Probably a final note for this stage of things: I PREFERRED opening messages in a new tab. And I believe that's what I always had. But this bug prevents seeing messages in a new tab, so seeing them in a new window doesn't seem that bad. However, the bug is still there and needs fixing. And, I wonder why it doesn't show up in everyone's TB. It would be good to understand what is different for a few of us, that causes this problem.

Another possibility turned up: In a Bug 1353856 discussion, Curt Esser suggested (quoting someone else), that if it works in safe mode
(and here opening message in tab does), try the following. I'll write how I do it in Windows 10. I do shift& "click on TB icon".
That gives choices for how to open in Safe Mode. Check "reset toolbars and controls". Then click on "Make changes and restart".
That worked for me, and now I can have messages open in a new tab when I double click on them. Just like in the old days.

PS -- that assumes that "a new tab" rather than "a new message window" is bulleted (see four entries ago).

Likely this is a duplicate of bug 1653168.
For that, starting with -safe-mode, and then opting to reset toolbars and addons.
Do make a copy of xulstore.json and attach it to this bug if that doesn't help.
