Steps to reproduce

  1. Open any video e.g. https://test-videos.co.uk/vids/bigbuckbunny/mp4/h264/720/Big_Buck_Bunny_720_10s_10MB.mp4
  2. Zoom in by some factor (here: 180%).

Expected result

Upscaled video is smooth (see bbb-stable.jpg in attached archive).

Actual result

Upscaled video is blocky/jagged (see bbb-nightly.jpg in attached archive).

Notes

Please compare the attached screenshots. After a recent (3-4 days ago?) update, Nightly started suffering from ugly upscaling artifacts on videos that are upscaled due to zoom or just regular stretching (e.g. 720p Youtube video on a 1440p display). To my untrained eye it seems that bilinear filtering is gone, being replaced with visually jarring nearest-neighbour filtering.

The comparison is between stable 79.0 and nightly 81.0a1 (2020-08-06).

hi, thank you for the report - it looks very similar to bug 1657428 where devs are already working on a patch, so i assume it's the same underlying issue.
