User-Agent: Mozilla/4.79 [en] (Win98; U)
Build Identifier: (Windows; U; Win98; en-US; rv:1.1) Gecko/20020826

The above happens in both Mozilla 1.1 & NS7 PR1 with the standard Download
window. I haven't used Download manager. Sometimes i can rename the file
extension & the appropriate program can run the download; most of the time the
file is corrupted & can't be opened. This has happened with both .exe 7 .txt
files on a consistant basis.

Reproducible: Sometimes

Steps to Reproduce:
1. click on a link to download
2. click EITHER "Save This File To Disk" OR "Open Using An Application" (I
select open only for a text file)
3.

Actual Results:
When the bug occurs, it changes the file's extension to .dll. The file may or
may not be possible to open after saving & changing file extension.

Expected Results:
saved file with correct extension & no corruption.

Win 98 SE with all patches, ASUS/AMD PC. Bug only occurs with Mozilla & NS7 PR1;
it does not occur with NS 4.79 or (the very seldom used!!) IE 6.

Could you point me to a particular link that demonstrates the problem?
I've solved the proble. Somehow both Moz 1.1 & NS7 had assigned themselves as
helper applications for .dll & .txt files.
Unfortunately i was wrong about the problem being solved. When downloading a
text file from our bank's server, it is converted to a .dll extension which is
unreadable even when i change the extension back to .txt. This does not happen
with Netscape 4.79, only with the new moz based browsers (Ns 7.0, NS 7.0 PR1,
Moz 1.1). When downloading, i get the message, "You have chosen to download a
type of file, "application Extension", [application octet stream] from "***",
what should Netscape (or Mozilla) do with this file? Open using dllfile Save
this file to disc". I'm sorry, i can't share this particular link due to
security reasons. I will post other links causing this as soon as I find them
per the previous request.

The only helper app left in
preferences is the (apparently) unremovable "text html handled
internally".
my problem is that all exe's are changed to a .jpg extension. NOWHERE in the
page does it list the link or file as a .jpg, but to see the problem, go to this
page, and try to download geiss by clicking DOWNLOAD under PLUGIN. clearly the
link says .exe, but it tries to launch the thing as a jpg. is this a dupe of a
bug somewhere else? this isnt the only link where it happens, also try to
download exe's from these pages and you will see the problem clear as day. i'm
using release builds too!
Mozilla 1.1
Mozilla/5.0 (Windows; U; Windows NT 5.1; en-US; rv:1.1) Gecko/20020826
on winxp.
try any link from fileflash.com for isntance. when the .exe/jpg finally
launches, it brings up a new window in xp that says this:

ADDRESS BAR: file:///C:/DOCUME~1/ROOT/LOCALS~1/TEMP/yats3281.exe.jpg
The image “file:///C:/DOCUME~1/ROOT/LOCALS~1/TEMP/yats3281.exe.jpg” cannot be
displayed, because it contains errors.

PLEASE fix this and copy it to the most relevant bug since i'm sure others must
be experiencing it. my guess is a problem with mime-types.
comment 6 is bug 160533 (and others)

Apparently this or closely related bug affects more than Windows platforms.
See below.

I'm trying to download talkback Mozilla 1.2b with Mozilla 1.0.1.
http://ftp.mozilla.org/pub/mozilla/releases/mozilla1.2b/mozilla-win32-1.2b-installer.exe

I do not get any choice about where it will be saved.
The download window just pops open and says it is saving ~.exe.jpg
After the download is done I get a Mozilla window

URL being:
file:///C:/DOCUME~1/JESSE~1.11-/LOCALS~1/TEMP/mozilla-win32-1.2b-ins-1.jpg

with this text:

> The image
> "file:///C:/DOCUME~1/JESSE~1.11-/LOCALS~1/TEMP/mozilla-win32-1.2b-ins-1.jpg"
> cannot be displayed, because it contains errors.

I do a search of the HDD, and there is no mozilla-win32-1.2 file anywhere.

If I try to download again, I get the same error message immediately.
The immediate error message is eliminated by clearing disk cache.

I downloaded the Linux version, and I got a proper dialogue box, and it
downloaded fine.

When I go to Edit | Preferences | Navigator | Helper Applications

I have "application/octed-stream" that has jpg as the extension.
The [Edit] button does not give any control over the extension.

I also have "application" associated with pdf extension.
In this window, the "File types:" window expands so that there are no
buttons visible, and the window is not expandable.

Clearly both of these are wrong.
I previously reported on a problem with the Helper Applications tool giving the
wrong extension to files and therefore associating the wrong helper. That may be
No. 141806 "foo.tgz saved as foo.tgz.gz"

A search of Bugzilla for "extension" gives a long list, most of which seem
related to this bug. Here is my culling of likely relatives:

In the application/octet-stream" problem, I clicked on the half-visible button
for "Remove". For the other one, although no buttons were visible, I removed it
by Alt-R. Then I could download Mozilla normally.

Bug 141806 depends on bug 120327, which changed state.

If anyone is still seeing this bug, could you please check this: Do you have an
entry in edit/preferences/helper apps with an extension of "dll"?

if so, remove it. if that doesn't fix this bug, please reopen.

otherwise this is a duplicate of bug 189598, marking as such.
