Details

(Keywords: perf:responsiveness)

User Agent: Mozilla/5.0 (Macintosh; Intel Mac OS X 10.14; rv:80.0) Gecko/20100101 Firefox/80.0

Steps to reproduce:

One of several sites that hang for minutes is below
https://www.dukemychart.org/home/

refreshed FireFox. removed all extensions, no joy

MacPro 2010, 2 x 2.93 GHz 6-Core Intel Xeon, Radeon RX 590 8 GB, Memory 48GB

Actual results:

Run a profile for you
https://share.firefox.dev/3m6Mlqd

Hung in two stages for maybe 5 minutes. Locks up everything but mouse. Mouse controls nothing during hang but all clicks eventually all happen at once.
This happens on other but not all sites.

Expected results:

Should have loaded

Hi david, i tried to replicate this on MacOS 10.14 using Firefox release 80.0.1 , i played a video and it doesnt seem to hung

Do i need to click or do anything special on that site in order for the hang to appear?

Can you please download Firefox Nightly from here: https://nightly.mozilla.org/ and retest the problem.

If you still have the issue please create a new profile, you have the steps here:https://support.mozilla.org/en-US/kb/profile-manager-create-and-remove-firefox-profiles?redirectlocale=en-US&redirectslug=Managing-profiles#w_starting-the-profile-manager

Lastly test if the issue is reproducible in safe mode, here is a link that can help you:
https://support.mozilla.org/en-US/kb/troubleshoot-firefox-issues-using-safe-mode

Regards

For reasons I don't understand it seems to have stopped hanging. It may have something to do with my enabling block auto play audio or video but some of the sites had no video or audio..

So Firefox is now working but I don't know why. It was hosed for about 10 days.

Thanks anyway

I will close this for now as resolved.
If it ever happens again you can contact us and let us know.

The problem is exactly as before.

Sometimes I see Firefox hung on a advertisement or tracking URL. I suspect it is associated with that.

I still experience this issue on different Mac computers, one running macOS 10.14.6 and another with 10.12.6. Very annoying because it makes the whole computer instable.
On both Macs I have Firefox on the beta channel, right now it's version 82.0b6 but I started noticing this a few weeks ago.
I can tell you for sure that the problem occurs with pages that have some auto-start videos, animated gifs or something like that.
This page is even worse, it causes my old iMac (the one with macOS 10.12) to reboot in kernel panic after a few seconds it loads:
https://www.xmind.net/blog/en/xmind-2020-or-xmind-8-it's-not-a-problem/
On Chrome the same page is properly and smoothly displayed.

I am now at 81.0.1. Now I can't get sites to load correctly. But I have fixed the problem. I have switched to Mac Safari which works perfectly. You really need to create a way to downgrade FireFox. I would like to be at version 79 before all of the improvements killed everything.

Updated to 82.0.b8 and nothing changed.
I would like to avoid the other workaround... switch back to Chrome.

I was unable to replicate this using Firefox version 81.0.1 on MacOS 10.14.6. all went smooth

I also tried with:
Firefox Beta 83.0b4
Firefox Nightly 84.0a1
Firefox Release 82.0.1

In all cases i was able to browse these 2 sites:

https://www.xmind.net/blog/en/xmind-2020-or-xmind-8-it's-not-a-problem/
https://www.dukemychart.org/home/

working without issues.

I am now at 82.0.1 most of the sites are working except for

https://www.wunderground.com/wundermap

where the map doesn't show up.

The site works on Chrome and Safari

David, does this reproduce for you using Firefox Nightly? https://www.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/channel/desktop/#nightly
If so, could you capture another performance profile in Nightly, using the "Firefox Platform" preset in the profiler? Start the recording before you trigger the hang, and capture the profile after the hang. Oh, actually, you'll need a large buffer size since the hang is so long. So after choosing "Firefox Platform", then choose "Custom", go to Edit Settings, and increase the buffer size to 1GiB or so.

The profile in comment 0 looks rather empty - as if nothing in Firefox was happening, and the problem was somewhere outside Firefox. From the description it sounds like the window manager locks up. This should only occur if we overloaded the GPU.

From Fox News https://www.foxnews.c

will try nightly shortly

I did a 40 second capture since it is happier or at least starts faster. The 82 version takes awhile to get to where I can click on links. Eventually it will allow me to do something.

84.0a1 (2020-11-12) (64-bit)
Nightly seems faster but takes a while for the videos to play

The total lock up seems gone in both 82 and 84. But Firefox seems slow on FoxNews compared to say Chrome.

FoxNews in my opinion has way to much going on in the site.

Hi David, thanks for the profiles. They clearly show a long script executing which leads to the slow script warning popping up and likely locking up the content. Unfortunately the part of the profile where the warning pops up is not sampled correctly and we need more information during that part. Do you mind capturing one more profile, ideally around the time things start locking up and not as long?

Also opened bug 1678651 for the profiler problem.

Thanks!

Seems like a fairly reproducible issue. I did it 4 times in a row.
