User Agent: Mozilla/5.0 (Windows NT 10.0; Win64; x64; rv:81.0) Gecko/20100101 Firefox/81.0
Steps to reproduce:
since Thunderbird upgraded to 78, for mail accounts stored on disk D:, i compose a message but don't send it immediately
Actual results:
after a while, i get the message "Unable to save as a draft". I click OK, and it comes back again and again, until i send the message.
if i try to save the message as a draft or as a template, i get the same message
NB : it doesn't happen for mail accounts stored on disk C:, and it didn't happen in versions before 78
Expected results:
i should not get this error message
For more information :
- directory of email account WITH the problem :
D:\Users\<my name>\AppData\Roaming\Thunderbird\Profiles\7oixmhjn.default\mail\pop.free.fr - directory of email WITHOUT the problem :
C:\Users\<my name>\AppData\Roaming\Thunderbird\Profiles\1g8ut7qt.default\Mail\pop.gmx.com - APPDATA is
APPDATA=C:\Users\<my name>\AppData\Roaming

Perhaps the D dir has roaming issues?
@mkmelin : which type of issue could it be ?
notice that this didn't happen with versions before 78
Are you running two installations of Thunderbird, one on each drive?
Is Thunderbird installed on the D: drive?
In the 7oixmhjn.default\mail'pop.free.fr' folder is there only the one 'Drafts' file or do you see additional ones eg: 'Drafts-1' ?
Have you tried to repair the folder ?
- right click on 'Drafts' folder and select 'Properties', click on 'Repair Folder' button, click on 'OK'
Have you recently compacted the 'Drafts' folder to remove all the previously deleted drafts to clean up the file ? - right click on 'Drafts' folder and select 'Compact'
Have you asked this question in the Support Forum?
If yes, please provide a link to that question.

my answers in your original text :

only one installation of Thunderbird, on drive C:

only Drafts, wich is empty (and Drafts.msf, 4 Ko)
Have you tried to repair the folder ?
- right click on 'Drafts' folder and select 'Properties', click on 'Repair Folder' button, click on 'OK'
I tried, the problem still exists

I tried, the problem still exists (note that Drafts file is empty)Have you asked this question in the Support Forum?

I didn't ask on the forum, and I didn't find a similar problem on Bugzilla
Additional information :
- if I delete the files Drafts and Drafts.msf, no new files are created
Thank you for your concern
I discovered this information in the config editor :
it seems that some profiles (old profiles ?) reside on disk C:
may be that could help...
Let's just go back a bit. This as this point is a support issue, not a bug. It will become a bug if someone can reproduce your issue and a fault in the code is found. Hence Anje asking if you had asked in the support forum. I must also assume you did not search the support forum as you are fixated on Bugzilla offering you similar issues. Most support issues do not make it to Bugzilla.
I am assuming you have been changing the account directory in the account settings. Is that correct? Rather than using the profile manager to place the entire profile into the D: drive. Exactly what your setup is makes a huge difference
So now we are left with the question of what is the D: drive? Given most windows computers, these days, have a single huge system partition and no other drive letters allocated I have no idea what sort of device this drive D: is.
Is it a USB drive? These have a dynamically issued drive letter under windows and it is subject to change by the operating system.
A NAS? THere are already identified issues with accessing profiles on NAS devices. If I understand it correctly this is dependant on NAS operating systems as well as other issues. But there is little point exploring that issue if that is the case here.
A synchronised storage space? Significant issues have been seen where profile data is stored on a cloud synchronised location. This is usually data corruption but I would hazard a guess total failure to read files is quite possible once they become corrupt through the synchronisation process.

I searched in the forum, but absolutely no information about installation of or migration to version 78. It stops at version 68.
The problem never happened before the 78 upgrade, that's why I think it is a bug (or at least a regression in the functionality)

Yes, I changed the account directory in the account settings. I HAD TO DO THAT because when Thunderbird upgraded to version 78, it didn't cope with the settings that was fully operational in previous versions. Until now, all upgrades, even for major upgrades, had any problem.
I have a new account, with data on drive C:, I just forgot to put on drive D: when I created it.
Note that I always let Thunderbird perform upgrades when it proposed me to do it.So now we are left with the question of what is the D: drive? Given most windows computers, these days, have a single huge system partition and no other drive letters allocated I have no idea what sort of device this drive D: is.
I have two built-in physical drives on my PC : first one is a SSD, where is the OS, the second one is a HDD where is my data.

Absolutely no data of Thunderbird (mails, profiles, ...) is synchronized. I do only frequent backups (when Thunderbird is not running, of course)
May be a complete re-installation would do it ? I can make a try...
Thank you again for your concern.
6 months later... I tried something :
instead of having the drafts of my account stored in the default place (i.e. on the D: disk, as the data of this account is stored on D:), I asked to put the drafts stored in the place of an other account which is stored on C:
Now, it's OK
My guess :
since at least 78.3 version, something has changed for the way to compute where drafts will be stored
May be that, for an unknown reason, Thunderbird doesn't access to D:\Users\<my name>\AppData\Roaming\Thunderbird\Profiles\xxxx.default\mail\pop.something.xx
I think it could try to access to D:\<my name>\AppData.... You see ? D:\<my name> instead of D:\Users\<my name>
Why ? because I have a similar problem with LibreOffice when saving a database. By default, LibreOffice tries to save the database on D:\<my name>\Documents
So I think that it could be the same in Thunderbird for the place to store the drafts
