I've just installed Thunderbird 78.4.3 (32-bit) on Windows 10 Pro 2004, build 19041.630. This is the first time I've used Thunderbird. I've transferred my emails from Windows Live Mail 2012 (via .eml and ImportExportTools NG), and I have more than 38,000 emails in my Inbox and more than 33,000 in Sent. I also have a number of local folders.
If I move an email from Inbox to a local folder, it does not appear in the destination folder. However, if I search the destination folder for the email recipient, I find it. And if I then open the email, and mark it as unread, and then click into a different folder and then back into the destination folder, the email appears in the list.
This is not a problem with every email addresses: an @sky.com email behaved properly, but several @gmail.com emails and an @tnt.com email vanished as described.
The same thing happened when I sent an email: it did not appear in Sent until I did the Find-mark unread trick. Oddly, when I tested Thunderbird before I imported emails from Windows Live Mail 2012 .eml files, this didn't happen - the sent email appeared in the Sent folder.
Also, when I marked all the emails in the inbox as "read", I can no longer see them, even though, in the bottom right hand corner, it still says I have x thousand emails, but none of them are actually visible!

Hi, are you sure that you don't have a filter enabled to only display unread mail? This sounds like a support request to me, not like a software bug.
I didn't set up any filters on this account. And I have not (knowingly) filtered to display only unread mail.
By the way, thanks for getting back to me! I'm a bit confused!
OK, so I changed from POP to IMAP and it resolved the problem. Sorry for wasting time and space. And it seems you are right Andre that it wasn't a bug. We did actually put a message in at Support Request too. Thanks.
Apologies for posting too soon! Changing to IMAP has NOT resolved the problem. Emails are still becoming invisible and "disappearing".
I seem to have found the solution: I needed to delete the .msf file for each folder in Local Folders. I found this out via https://www.mboxtooutlook.org/blog/thunderbird-inbox-missing-emails.html Perhaps a bug to do with importing from Windows Live Mail?

More likely your anti-virus product of choice is locking the file to scan it when Thunderbird is trying to update it. This is far more common than it should be. You may well see this on an ongoing basis. The cure is to prevent the anti-virus from actually accessing the Thunderbird profile folder to do scans while the program is using it. (create an exclusion in the anti-virus product.)

Lara, does your problem go away if Windows is started in safe mode?
