First off, I know this will most likely be marked as a duplicate but please bear
with me for a moment of rational discussion.
My general usage patterns for Mozilla are to have several (5 - 8) tabs open at
any given time. These typically include "My Yahoo" page, Google search, some
Java docs, and various pages of interest with many links.
Many times I do a Yahoo! or Google search for some information. I typically
middle-click on a result to bring up a new page. I scan the new page, and when
finished, I close it. At these times I wish the current tab close behavior was
to bring me back to the previous tab (the search results list tab) and not the
right most tab.
Occasionaly when doing a search I open several matches at once and want to
review them one at a time. In this case, the current behavior of returning to
the right most tab (as of 1.1) makes sense.
More often then not though, I perform my first scenario and would prefer tab
closing to take me to the previously viewed tab.
Now, before I created this RFE, I did a bugzilla search and found quite a few
similar requests with some rather "interesting" discussions on the topic.
A few things became quite clear from reading all the different discussions and
individuals bugs. First, many users have expressed an interest in either
changing the current tab close behavior to something different or for the
creation of some preferences so a user can select what they prefer from several
possibilities.
Second, the module owner seems determined to ignore the wishes of so many users.
I respectfully ask the module owner to reconsider their position. If so many
people are requesting this type of change, as is evident from the countless
duplicates and apparent requests in newsgroups, there must be some validity to
adding a change.
I personally like having more preferences. Power users like flexibility. Casual
users will simply ignore the new preferences and will happily live with the default.
Since there is no way to change the current default to some other behavior that
would make all users happy, the suggestion to add a preference would be the best
choice. Give a user two or three choices (return right most, return to previous
focus, and maybe return to "parent" tab). These choices seemed to cover the
majority of other user's requests. I know there are others.
I would go so far as to make these options available from the tab context menu
so I may quickly change my preference quickly depending on the type of search or
usage I'm currently involved in.
Please consider this enhancement. Thank you for your time.
Rick
See Bug 105722, "Closing tabs should return to 'parent' tab" and discussion
there. Probably dupe.
Why don't you just install Tabbrowser Extensions into Mozilla? It will add the
preferences you want and add several new features to the context menu on each
tab. There will be special preferences for what you want located in the Tabbed
browsing heading in Preferences.
