User Agent: Mozilla/5.0 (Windows NT 10.0; Win64; x64; rv:83.0) Gecko/20100101 Firefox/83.0

Steps to reproduce:

Double clicked on a new message in the thread pane.

Actual results:

The new message opened in a new window.

Expected results:

It should have opened in an existing message window.

Here is what I posted in Mozilla Support last week:

"Ever since updating to TB 78.x I can no longer open messages in an existing message window when I double click on the message in the thread pane. They always open in a new window. In Options>General I have it checked to open in an existing message window. In the config editor the mail.openmessage.Behavior says it is modified and is set to 1. Even when I run TB in safe mode with all add-ons disabled it still opens in a new message window. How can I get it back to opening messages in an existing message window like it's been doing for the past several years? I'm currently using TB 78.4.2 (64 bit)."

Today I updated to 78.5 and the same thing is happening.

I am also facing the same problem, but I realized that maybe this is not a problem of thunderbird but the extent that I believe we are using, the 'Maximize Message Pane'.

I went back to version 68.12 and disabled the extension, the behavior was the same 78.5, the email was opened in a new window. When I activated the extension, it was opened in the same window.

Although not the default behavior, opening in the same window should be at least one option. And I am not talking about opening in another tab, but in the existing one.
Viewing the messages in the default way, dividing the screen between the list of emails and their content is terrible. The space is badly used, full of information, there is little screen left to display the text that really matters. My screen is not big or so small, it's 24", and it's already bad, imagine for notebooks with smaller screens?
Btw, this problem becomes even more evident when you work with signed and/or encrypted emails, enigmail adds an alert that takes up even more space from where it doesn't have it.

Thank you for your comments.

The updated version of Maximize Message Pane now gives you the option of a Maximize button for the toolbar. When you single-click a new message in the thread pane and then hit the Maximize button on the toolbar, then the message opens in an existing window (covering the thread pane) just like it used to. But double-clicking on the new message no longer works that way.

It's another added click in the process and I guess I'll get used to it eventually but it's a shame that such a great function was removed.

Yes, I agree.
The difference between having to simply double click on the message, or using the Enter button, and having to click on a button at the top of the program is very big. Especially because this is a task that will be repeated many and many times during the day.

the discussion on the extension author's website: https://hogi.sakura.ne.jp/hiki/?Ticket-367

I hope he can help us here.

Hey Lori, sorry that your favorite addon feature has changed...

The option Open messages in: an existing message window works as designed without any addons. It will open a new window only for the first message (msg1) you double-click. Don't close that message window, go back to message list in TB's main window, dbl-click another message msg2, and msg2 will correctly open in the same message window (replacing msg1 display there). So you can double-click to view any message in that single window, full-screen size. Just press Alt+Tab to go back and forth between the message window and TB main window.

Even when I run TB in safe mode with all add-ons disabled it still opens in a new message window.

Hmm, well, that's expected: when your addon is disabled, and you still have Open messages in: an existing message window enabled, the first double-click must open the message in a new window, but you can open other messages in that same window without creating more new windows, as described above.

How can I get it back to opening messages in an existing message window like it's been doing for the past several years? I'm currently using TB 78.4.2 (64 bit)."

From the discussion above, I understand that here you want a different behaviour: You want the message to maximize from the preview pane and cover the message list, without opening a tab, new window, or opening the message in an existing satellite window. That's a feature of the addon "Maximize Message Pane" which is different from TB's inbuilt feature "Open messages in: an existing message window".

Today I updated to 78.5 and the same thing is happening.

Not a bug in Thunderbird, hence invalid.
The addon author has removed the double-click-to-maximize-from-preview-pane functionality, as he said on the addon ticket.
Unfortunately, there's nothing we can do for you here, you have to talk to the addon author as Vincent said:

Aw, gnarts!!!

Thomas, thank you very much for your very clear explanation. Now I understand how TB's new message window thing works, and how the add-on used to make it work, and how it doesn't work anymore.

Yes, this is exactly what I want. Is there a way to turn this into a feature suggestion for the next version of TB? It really does make things go so much faster when you're trying to zip through emails!

Thanks again, Thomas!

Hi, Thomas.

I don't think you've seen my messages, but one of the problems with all this is that Maximize Message Pane worked by double clicking on the previous version of thunderbird, and now it only works through a button that must be added. This completely changes the way we used this extension. Not even a shortcut can be defined.

You're free to file this as an RFE, but tbh, I doubt that anyone would pick this up as a feature request at this time.
Have you tried ≡ > Customize > Layout > Vertical View (or Wide View)?
Vertical View will offer more vertical space for previewing messages on today's wide screens.

So with the addon, after maximizing covers or shrinks most of your message list, how do you shrink the message again to see your message list?
Any screenshots or screencasts to illustrate the addon functionality?

Vincent, I've seen your messages... The behaviour of the addon has changed, so that's not a defect in TB. You can try to find out from addon author why he has changed it. If it's a shortcoming of TB addon API, you can file a bug for that to extend the API. Or you can file a clean, elaborate feature request. It's just not a defect of TB, so this bug is technically invalid, and morphing won't work well.

Meh. Doesn't come close to how well the MMP worked.

So with the addon, after maximizing covers or shrinks most of your message list, how do you shrink the message again to see your message list?

Double clicking on the message header brought you right back to the thread pane.

Any screenshots or screencasts to illustrate the addon functionality?
