User Agent: Mozilla/5.0 (Windows NT 10.0; Win64; x64; rv:83.0) Gecko/20100101 Firefox/83.0
Steps to reproduce:
Let's say, my default identity is at-home@example.com so this is what is set as sender when composing mails.
When composing an email to the recipient work-foo@bar.com the mail would get sent with my default identity, which is unwanted in this case.
Actual results:
The user has to watch carefully, that the correct identity is set and select manually when needed. This is a potential reason for errors.
Expected results:
Thunderbird should be capable of selecting the used identity based on the recipient. If multiple identities / mail addresses are configured, it's important to not mix up e.g. work and private communication.
Example:
- When composing a mail to the recipient work-foo@bar.com my sender identity should automatically switch to at.work@example.com
- When composing a mail to the recipient alternative-foo@bar.com my sender identity should always automatically switch to gaming@example.com
- ...
This was already available in two add-ons which were abandoned (due to the technical changes made to the current Thunderbird platform):
• Correct Identity https://addons.thunderbird.net/en-US/thunderbird/addon/correct-identity/
• Flexible Identity https://addons.thunderbird.net/en-US/thunderbird/addon/flexible-identity/
This functionality is imo too important to make it dependent on external add-on developers and should be implemented directly into Thunderbird.
