User Agent: Mozilla/5.0 (Windows NT 10.0; Win64; x64; rv:83.0) Gecko/20100101 Firefox/83.0
Steps to reproduce:
Start a new mail, type in the To: field the name of a non-empty (Thunderbird-defined) address list. See attached screen shot.
This behaviour has been there for a while.
Actual results:
Send remains disabled, as though no recipient hadbeen specified. The only way to send the mail is by adding a spurious recipient (usually I add myself in Bcc)
Expected results:
Send should be enabled

Thank you for reporting this!
Reproduced exactly as seen in reporter's screenshot.
It's a bug indeed. This is caused by the colon in the name of your mailing list, which causes your recipient pill to be marked invalid (red). As a workaround, you can remove the colon, then it will work as expected.
If Thunderbird cannot accept colons, it must prevent them (although it would be preferrable to accept them.) IIrc, we have a check somewhere, but apparently it's not yet good enough or not yet at all places.

Wow - that was fast, I'm impressed.
I am already much obliged for the analysis: I've removed the colon from my list names, that does the trick and saves me some hassle. Good job!
