User Agent: Mozilla/5.0 (X11; Linux x86_64; rv:83.0) Gecko/20100101 Firefox/83.0

Steps to reproduce:

Access an email in the inbox or any other folder.

Actual results:

The sender always appear with an unrelated email address. That email is always the same for any received or old email.

Expected results:

Show the correct sender server address I think... At least not showing a completely unrelated email address.

Confirmed with 78.6.0 from Debian Sid/unstable. I guess, the Sender field is not cleared for some reason.

Hi,
I experienced the same bug. I already discussed the topic within the german thunderbird discussion board (https://www.thunderbird-mail.de/forum/thread/85330-fremde-sender-email-adresse-im-header/) and found steps to reproduce:

Translation from my post on https://www.thunderbird-mail.de/forum/thread/85330-fremde-sender-email-adresse-im-header/:

Steps to reproduce:

  • start Thunderbird
  • open any inbox
  • open a mail that has been sent from a (outlook) group mailbox and that contains a "Sender" header field
  • now the field "Sender" becomes visible like it should do; additionally to From, To and Subject
  • open another mail (that hasn't been sent by a (outlook) group mailbox)
  • the field "Sender" is still visible and shows the same mailadress like before, although you're viewing a completely different mail
  • for testing purposes: open another mail, that HAS been sent by ANOTHER (outlook) group mailbox AND has a Sender field too
  • now the new Sender-Mailadress is displayed and like before, it is shown even if you open a different mail now
  • the field will be displayed until you quit Thunderbird. Till then the field will always be "refreshed" with the last "opened" Sender-Adress and will not be hidden till you quit Thunderbird.

Actual results:

  • the field will be displayed until you quit Thunderbird. Till then the field will always be "refreshed" with the last "opened" Sender-Adress and will not be hidden till you quit Thunderbird. The field was still shown when I opened mails that didnt contain a Sender field in their header (checked with strg+u)

Expected results:

  • the Sender field should only be shown, if the mail header has a header-Sender-field.
  • if there is a header-Sender-field, the contained mail adress should be displayed in the Thunderbird UI next to "To", "Subject" and "From"
  • if there is no header-Sender-field, the field should not be displayed in the Thunderbird UI next to "To", "Subject" and "From"

Note:
I'm not sure, if the mail must be a group mailbox-mail but all mails with a Sender field that I was able to find in my inbox were these kind of mails.

I also experience this and as far as I could tell, only restarting Thunderbird clears the Sender field.

I have started a question on the support pages here: https://support.mozilla.org/en-US/questions/1323257

After some analysis I have found that the Sender header is shown for SMIME mails if the signer doesn't match the from address. This happens with some of my mailing lists which replace the from address with the list address.

I have mailnews.headers.showSender set to false, i.e. under normal circumstances it will show no sender header. When a Sender header is shown due to a SMIME mail this header isn't removed from the header pane after you move to the next mail. I guess because showSender is set to false noone thought that the Sender header may appear anyway. Therefore, the Sender header sticks to the pane until you open the next SMIME mail for which it shows a different Sender header.
