This bug is filed in response to the discussion on bug 14630, to address the need to have persistent mail checking in Mozilla. It seems to be the agreement that the feature is necessary, just not how it should be implemented. Suggestions include modification to the current quicklaunch system to allow more of Mozilla to remain resident in memory (upon user preference of course) when all windows are closed. This is my preferred method, since it will probably solve bug 147254 as well.
Oops. Thats bug 146340 for those of you playing at home.
Can you clarify, here? Are you asking for a stand-alone app to check mail? Bug 11056. Are you wanting mail to be checked if you don't have mail running? Bug 71105. There is also a turbo/quick-launch integration bug out there, but I can't find it right now.
I think (at least from the discussion on bug 146340) that the idea was that some apps need to keep running even when all their windows are closed (like mail and the download manager)... You know, like how quicklaunch *used* to work. Just to keep the running in the system tray, performing their tasks that have been assigned them. I guess this would be a dup of the problems described in bug 71105, although the cause on Win32 is described in bug 146340. It used to work, and now it doesn't, and the people responsible for quicklaunch are unwilling to revert the code, apparently because of underlying memory leak issues in the browser. So, I'm not sure whether this is a dup or not, since it seems to me that other platforms haven't had this feature yet, whereas on Win32 the feature worked, but was just (purposely) broken. If you can dig up the turob/quicklaunch integration bug, that would probably make the most sense for what we're looking for.

Yep, that bug 138960 seems like exactly what I want, marking this as dup and closing. *** This bug has been marked as a duplicate of 138960 ***
