I have verified this task and I can confirm that the section menu buttons are no longer displayed if the browser.newtabpage.activity-stream.newNewtabExperience.enabled pref is set to true in the "about:config" page.
Verified using the latest Firefox Nightly (86.0a1 Build ID - 20210115035053) installed on Windows 10 x64, Mac 10.15.7, and Linux Mint 20 x64.
Status: RESOLVED → VERIFIED
