RESOLVED DUPLICATE of bug 167010

People

(Reporter: erwinm, Unassigned)

Details

User Agent: Mozilla/5.0 (Macintosh; Intel Mac OS X 10.14; rv:84.0) Gecko/20100101 Firefox/84.0

Steps to reproduce:

Tried to create message filters.

Tried to copy text from the from field to avoid having to manually retype it to create the filters.

Actual results:

Could not select text.

Expected results:

Should be possible to select text.

Yes, I can copy the entire address, and chop off some if I want. But I should be able to select text.

Correct, you can right click and pick "copy email address". I seriously doubt we're going to provide selecting text - it's not displayed in the header in a format conducive to doing that, and we haven't done it in the 10 years since the header was redesigned.

Correction, this isn't a duplicate. But I do think it should be closed wontfix - this is the first ever request for this in bugzilla (according to my search) so there must not be significant demand for it.

Perhaps bug 752188 should be wontfix as well

I agree with the WONTFIX.
Turning that into a selectable input field would create so many issues that it's not worth it.
With the context menu on right click, you can choose if to copy the email, or the full field with the name.

Objection, your honor!
This is just another duplicate of a long-standing frequently requested bug (9 duplicates now):

Bug 167010 - Can't select text to copy email addresses in message header [sender, recipients, Ctrl+C]

Perhaps the problem is less that the text of email addresses isn't selectable, but rather that there's no way at all to copy more than one recipient of a received message, requiring workarounds like Reply to copy those. If we had at least something like in composition where recipients are itemized, but selectable via keyboard and mouse, that would be better.

Perhaps bug 752188 should be wontfix as well

Bug 752188 has nothing to do with this, that's about inability to use Ctrl+C on selectable read-only text inside the Edit Contact dialog.
I've just added a screenshot to clarify (Bug 752188 Comment 7), that's just a technical nit in the code due to the weird way that dialog is constructed.

Thanks for finding that bug. In that case, bug 167010 should be wontfix. nine duplicates in 20 years is underwhelming at best.

We don't need to add code to accommodate every person's use case, i.e. code is not the answer to every problem. Specifically, I see no reason why we should add code that we must maintain just to help a user to avoid editing text they paste in some other location.

modulo, perhaps, the ability to be able to copy ALL addresses.
Note, a workaround is perhaps View Source?
