Thunderbird version : 78.7.0 (64 bits) as shipped by Debian 10
Receiving HTML messages composed using Microsoft Outlook, where the user has not explicitly set the font color but where the background is explicitly set as white. In this case Outlook sets <body bgcolor="white"> and uses <span style="color:windowtext"> for the text.
.eml file attached, message contents has been sanitized but CSS generated by Outlook as been left as-is.
Using KDE "breeze" theme (the standard, clear one), font color is rendered as black on white background, text is readable. (screenshot attached)
Using KDE "breeze dark" theme, font color is rendered as light grey on white background, which makes takes very hard to read. (screenshot attached)
For HTML email with explicit white background and no explicit font color, text body should be rendered as black, irrespective of KDE theme used. While other explicit body color might exists without font color set, explicit white background seems to be the default in Outlook.
Trying to force colors through the use of the settings works, but then all text gets rendered as the chosen color, which means loosing the information conveyed by the use of different text colors in the message.
While the original issue is clearly Outlook settings one color (background) but not the other (text), Thunderbird should probably fall back to sane defaults in this case, as current behavior makes interoperability with "corporate" senders painful.

Same problems on Debian with xfce and "Adwaita-dark" theme.
I need to set "override to the colors specified by the content with my selections above" to Always (in prefs->general->language & appearance->colors...).
I was running 78, and most of the color/theme problems, seem to be marked fixed/wontfix/worksforme so I was hopeful that newer versions would result in readable emails. Alas, using thunderbird=1:88.0~b2-1 , still results in a large proportion of unreadable messages on a default install.

Its not just HTML messages - same problem with plain text messages as well.
Unless the color 'override' is set to always - viewing a message (text or html) has white background when using dark theme.
Confirmed bug in TB version 102.0.1

Thanks for reporting this. The above bugs have been closed.
Does this reproduce with a newer version? 102 or (preferably) 115?
I have just checked one of my installs (115.4.1), and it seems to be legible, (but dark theme has white/light background - which is a bit jarring but passable).
PS. It's been a while, so I'm not sure whether it's reproducible on a new install.
