After the Thunderbird Daily update with the major version bump (from 87 to 88) the following page was opened in the browser:

https://start.thunderbird.net/en-US/daily/?uri=/thunderbird/whatsnew/&locale=de&version=88.0a1&channel=nightly&os=Darwin&buildid=20210223105829&oldversion=87.0a1

The same already happened on Thunderbird Daily after the bump from 86 to 87. I was also able to reproduce the issue on Thunderbird Beta after updating from 85 to 86. This didn't happen in the past (I believe the page opened in a Thunderbird tab, if I remember correctly).

Opening the what's new page in the browser is intentional. See bug 1563411 comment 24 and 25.

Yes, this is intentional and has been this way since some time before 78.,
