Steps to reproduce:
I'm having an issue with "Default" theme in recent versions of Thunderbird (on Linux). The theme is supposed to use "the operating system color scheme". However, it doesn't do that correctly when I start Thunderbird. To get Thunderbird to properly use the operating system color scheme, I need to switch to a different them (such as "Dark") and then back to "Default". Only then does it use the correct colors. And I need to do this each and every time I start Thunderbird.
Steps to reproduce:
- Start Thunderbird (which is set to use Default theme).
- Try to compose a new message.
- Switch to another theme.
- Then switch back to Default theme.
Actual results:
At startup, when I try to compose a new message, Thunderbird is not using the correct color scheme. It is using light blue quoted text on grey background - which is not part of my operating system's color scheme. (See http://darose.net/ThunderbirdThemeIssue1.png)
When I open up the list of themes, I see that Default is selected, but that theme is not using the correct colors. (See http://darose.net/ThunderbirdThemeIssue2.png)
Expected results:
To make the Default theme work correctly, I need to first temporarily switch to a different theme, such as Dark (http://darose.net/ThunderbirdThemeIssue3.png) and then switch back to Default (http://darose.net/ThunderbirdThemeIssue4.png).
Only after I take those steps does Thunderbird correctly use the colors that it should have from my OS theme - dark blue quoted text on black background. (http://darose.net/ThunderbirdThemeIssue5.png)

I probably looked at it and there wasn't enough information to try to reproduce it.
Not experiencing any issue using Thunderbird 78 on my Fedora 33 Workstation, Gnome Desktop with the Adwaita-dark operating system theme, and Thunderbird default.
What OS, desktop, system theme?

FYI, if you want to test with the customized theme I'm using, you can d/l it from here: http://darose.net/adwaita-dark-darose.tgz

Thanks for the detailed report.
Would you be able to test this issue with another theme? Something like Adwaita?
Are you experiencing the same issue with it?

Same problem when using "Adwaita-dark" OS theme:
When Thunderbird starts up (incorrect colors): http://darose.net/ThunderbirdThemeIssue6.png
After I switch to TBird theme Dark, and then back to default: http://darose.net/ThunderbirdThemeIssue7.png

So this is an issue that is affecting exclusively the compose editor, right?
Window decorations and other elements seems correct from your screenshots.
Richard, any hint on this?
I wonder if this is us of m-c.

Yes, I think that's correct. This does appear to only be an issue with the color theming in the compose window.

I can reproduce this too on Mint with 78 and also on Ubuntu with 89.
I think the dark/light theme detections does something weird. When starting with the dark theme it shows the prefs, editor etc. correctly in dark. But when switching to dark theme and then back to default it detects a light theme, which is wrong with the "Adwaita-dark" theme, and switches to the light theme for prefs etc. After restart of TB it uses the correct dark in-content theme.

Shouldn't TB not do any theme detection when using the TB Default theme? Its description says "A theme with the operating system color scheme." So I would think it should just use the OS color scheme period.

Hmmm ... doesn't look like this will be getting fixed any time soon ...

I can reproduce with 78.12.0 using the Adwaita-dark theme when switching from the TB dark theme to the default.
Using 91.0b1, the switch briefly flashes white, then returns to the proper default theme.
Switching from the TB light theme, back to the TB default theme, remains light for me with 91.0b1.
Edit: A restart fixes it.

Any chance of this getting fixed soon? I just upgraded to TB 91.1.0 and am still having the same issue.

Thanks. Are you still seeing this with newest 91?

Yes. See screenshot from today http://darose.net/ThunderbirdThemeIssue6.png . It should look like this: http://darose.net/ThunderbirdThemeIssue5.png

So, this doesn't seem to be a "theme" issue per se as the chrome part (tabs, window decorations, etc) are correctly styled.
This is an issue only with the editor colors in the compose message, right?

Sort of. Yes, the issue is only with the editor colors. But if you see my original description (and screenshots) up above, it was possible to correct the issue by switching to Dark theme and then back to System colors theme again.
However, even that no longer seems to work now, and there no longer appears to be any way to make the compose editor display my desired colors. (As in the screenshot at http://darose.net/ThunderbirdThemeIssue5.png)
