If I select the profile from the command line the profile is not read. I get the Profileselection window to select the profile. Mozilla's help lists the following -P <profile> Start with <profile>. To reproduce this problem start mozilla with mozilla -P "Profilename". Even though the profile name is specified Mozilla will bring the Profile selection window. I hope this is a generic UNIX problem.

BUG VERIFICATION ON HP-UX and LINUX Tested -P flag with Mozilla 1.1 on HP-UX 11.00 (PA) and Linux. Works fine, brings up the browser with the specified profile. Also worked with Netscape 7.0 on PA, IPF, and Linux. Note: I did get the "Select Profile" screen when I mistakenly typed the screenname, rather than the profile name, for my account. Also, when I miss-typed the profile name.

Did it read the preferences file "prefs.js". One way to check is add the following lines to your prefs.js under .mozilla/"Profilename"/***.slt/prefs.js prefs.js:user_pref("general.startup.editor", true); prefs.js:user_pref("general.startup.mail", true); The next time when you start the browser mozilla should bring a navigator, composer and a mail client. In my case it brought up only the Navigator window ignoring the prefernces set in my prefs.js file. (Rather I should have said in my earlier report that mozilla doesn't read the preferences file)
