User Agent: Mozilla/5.0 (Windows NT 10.0; Win64; x64; rv:87.0) Gecko/20100101 Firefox/87.0

Steps to reproduce:

Open https://www.brita.com/ in release (87.0) or nightly or ESR (78.8.0esr).

Attempt to navigate to another site using either:

  • enter URL in address bar and press Enter
  • enter query term in address bar and Shift+click search engine button
  • click a bookmark on the Bookmarks Toolbar

Actual results:

Instead of navigating to the requested URL, the current page reloads in the tab. First reported at https://support.mozilla.org/questions/1332216

Expected results:

Normal navigation is expected; user should not be trapped.

All of these work for me both in private windows and non-private ones. Tested on macOS with beta 88.

Perhaps we're being served different content due to geographic location? Can you post a screenshot of the site content?

I notice that I've got various content blocked at the moment by Cisco Umbrella (OpenDNS). I'll try making an exception.

Okay, here's how it normally looks for me. (Had to import a cert into this test profile.)

Yeah, I get automatically redirected to a placeholder page that is just an image, very different from what you're seeing. I'll move this and hopefully some en-US-based folks can look at this.

I can reproduce the behavior described in comment 0.

Very annoying. I doubt it's on purpose and it doesn't happen in Chrome, but the navigation starts, some kind of tracking xhr to paypal fires, and then the brita site reloads. The site is a mass of minimized JS, of course.

Maybe it runs some unload event that Chrome ignores as one of their interventions.

Same issue observed on Gmail when an attachment preview is overlaid on a message:

https://www.reddit.com/r/firefox/comments/mwkii3/strange_bug_with_gmail_and_attachments_firefox/

S3 for now as this is reproducing on a specific site.

This is being reported on LinkedIn over on r/Firefox:

https://www.reddit.com/r/firefox/comments/1bfio7z/cant_leave_linkedin_through_address_bar/

I wasn't able to replicate it on the main feed page, but will ask for more info.

I can't reproduce on Brita any more.
