Jonathan, looks like the issues you were seeing with asleep printers or such? Do you know if this is known?

I see something similar on Thunderbird 91.6.1 for Linux (OpenSUSE 15.3, x86-64)
The built-in print dialog spins on "Preparing preview" for 90 seconds before the print preview appears, even when cups-pdf is the destination. Clicking "Print" while the throbber is spinning causes the button to be disabled but nothing is printed until the initial 90-second delay/timeout elapses (that is, if I open the print dialog, let it spin for 60 seconds, then click 'print', nothing is printed for another 30 seconds).
Setting print.tab_modal.enabled to False causes Thunderbird to use the system print dialog and everything works.
This is somewhat reminiscent of bug 1661751, comment #17 except that in this case I don't see an exception in the debug window.
