After two complaints in Support Forum, I tested this issue.
I'm using 78.10.2
I selected a folder and typed a load of nonsense into quick filter so nothing would be found, and got the pop message asking if I wanted to use Global Search, but I can backspace, type, space, backspace to add remove what I had typed and Global Search was n ot invoked unitl I press 'Enter'. This is what is expected.
However, as both users mention typing quickly, I kept pressing a key ffffffffffffffffff and then backspacing fast by holding down and repeating this rapidly and suddenly the Global Search tab opened trying to search on fffffffffffff.

" Because of the search delay, if you type fast then even pressing backspace, to correct your search, results in another search key that is not found, triggering the global search. So if I quickly type "htomail", no results, ah, I see what I did, begin pressing backspace to change my typo, then as soon as I press backspace once, it searches "htomai" which also has zero results and opens global search."

I thought we already had a bug report of this, but didn't find one. So I must have seen it reported elsewhere - other than the two support articles cited above.
In this gif video you can see:
- some emails listed
- I type thisisnotfound quite quickly
- no emails listed, given offer to continue with Enter.
- After a good pause, I press backspace to correct my iput
- unwanted launch of full search

I am failing to reproduce this on 78.10.2 (32-bit), Win10.
For all those who are able to reproduce:
- Are you able to reproduce after
≡ > Help > Restart with Addons Disabled…
? - Are you using CardBook Add-on?
There's similar bug 1711558 involving CardBook Add-on, and we're still investigating if it's an add-on bug or TB bug (yes, it's currently resolved, but still).
You're right, apologies: if I run in safe mode it does not happen. And I am running CardBook.
Likewise, if I disable CardBook and restart thunderbird then it does not happen.
I'll look to file a bug on CardBook.
