Close three tabs, go to History->Recently closed tabs->middle-click any tab that's not on the bottom.

The Bugbug bot thinks this bug should belong to the 'Firefox::Session Restore' component, and is moving the bug to that component. Please revert this change in case you think the bot is wrong.

Hey wakext,
I tried reproducing this issue on the latest versions of Firefox Nightly 90.0a1 (2021-05-30), beta 89.0 and release 88.0.1 following your steps but it opens exactly the page I'm middle clicking.
Can you test the issue while in Safe Mode? You can find helpful info here : https://support.mozilla.org/en-US/kb/troubleshoot-firefox-issues-using-safe-mode .
Also a fresh new profile could help. You can find more about creating a new profile here : https://support.mozilla.org/en-US/kb/troubleshoot-and-diagnose-firefox-problems#w_6-create-a-new-firefox-profile .
If possible, you can test this issue on the nightly build as well. Download the build from : https://www.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/nightly/all/ .

Same behavior whether the profile is old or new, enabling safe mode also doesn't change anything.
Nightly 90.0a1 (2021-05-31) (64-bit) also shows the same behavior, again safe mode does nothing.
Added a .gif of it to visualize the problem in Nightly.
Would a capture help (if so, with what settings?) or is that strictly only for performance problems and doesn't even register what is going in the menus/tabs?
I am also experiencing this bug after the Firefox 89.0 update. It occurs when following the steps in Troubleshooting Mode and Private Window as well. I also tested on a new VM with a fresh install of Firefox and I was able to reproduce the bug there.

Since this issue already has a component the dev team is aware and hopefully they will provide a solution for it.
Fixed in bug 1718436.
