Using either dark mode or system default theme which is a dark mode, results in most components honouring the dark theme, but the preview panel for mails both for received and sent fails to honour the dark theme, even though the other components of the UI do honour the dark mode.

This is a regression in 90.0b1 since dark mode was honoured fine in the preview pane in 89.0b4.

This bug remains unfixed in 90.0b2

I tried displaying a plain text e-mail in TB 78, 89b4 and 90b1 on Windows and it's always displayed with black text on white background. That's different to the compose window.

Could you please attach a screenshot to explain the problem further.

duplicate of bug 1715361?

Flags: needinfo?(richard.marti)

In 78 we tried to show the messages with dark background. But because of issues with badly styled messages we had to revert. Since then we haven't changed anything on this. I don't know how 89 should have shown them as dark. There isn't enough info in this report.

Yes, I think we should dupe it to bug 1715361 because there should be done the solution.

This is how received mail was rendered correctly in dark mode in 89.0b4

This is the same view of received mail rendered in 90.0b1 - with black text on a white background which is not what should be the result if dark mode is honoured

Screenshot showing preview pane rendered correctly in 89.0b4

This is surprising since as per comment #5 the background should be white. Are you using any add-ons/themes or changes to userChrome.css? Do you get a dark background in "safe mode" (add-ons disabled, see Help menu (at least on Windows)). Do you get this behaviour on a new profile? (Start thunderbird -p to create one.)

I am using a system dark theme in plasma desktop in arch linux, and Thunderbird is set to using the system theme. which worked fine as you can see up to 89.0 but fails in 90.0b1 and also 90.0b2. I have 'Use system colours' set, and the checkbox for 'Override the colours specified by the content with my selections above' is set to 'Always'. I have no additional themes installed.
