User Agent: Mozilla/5.0 (Windows NT 6.1; Win64; x64; rv:88.0) Gecko/20100101 Firefox/88.0
Steps to reproduce:
Nothing
Actual results:
A dialog message automatically appeared (see screenshot).
The dialog text suggests, that disk space will be released for deleted messages. Therefore one would assume, that the trash will be emptied.
Actually this is not the case.
I don't know, what's the exact wording of the original english text. Maybe this is misleading too.
Expected results:
Message dialog should say that disk space for folders is reorganized to save space.

I don't think, this is a duplicate of bug 545935.
This is about the dialog text, saying that DELETED messages (i would assume: from trash) will be removed.
This bug is not about "compact" vs. "compress".
Actually in my case no messages have not been DELETED, but moved to another (sub-)folder.

(In reply to MozBug20 from comment #2)
I don't think, this is a duplicate of bug 545935.
This is about the dialog text, saying that DELETED messages (i would assume: from trash) will be removed.
This bug is not about "compact" vs. "compress".
It is the same dialog for the "Compact folders" feature. That compacts the local archive, removing messages that were already deleted in the program, but remain in the local file for the time being (and can be "resurrected" if needed).
Actually in my case no messages have not been DELETED, but moved to another (sub-)folder.
Where were they moved?
My last sentence is not fully correct. To be more exact:
There are messages, which have been deleted (by using DEL key on keyboard), i. e. moved to trash folder
and
there are messages, which have been moved from INBOX to some subfolder of the same (IMAP) account using drag and drop.
When reading the message dialog, i'm expecting that the trash folder will be emptied, as the text says that DELETED messages will be removed.
Actually the trash is not emptied, but folders are reorganized/compressed/compacted (whatever wording you like most) to save disk space.
From my point of view, the behaviour is ok, but the wording is misleading.
Technically moving a message from INBOX to elsewhere maybe a delete in INBOX, but it is not a delete from the user's point of view.

I think MozBug20 definitely has a point – I have been explaining to people who I have been helping with Thunderbird and other stuff that it is o.k. to “compact folders” and that it is important that they allow it for maintenance purposes.
But the actual point here is: The German localization is just an accurate translation of the equally bad English text.
My suggestion to improve the English text would be:
„The messages you have deleted can be purged from disk. This operation will save about 208 MB of disk space. Note that this process does not delete any messages from folders. It is recommended you allow this since compacting is a normal and necessary maintenance process. If you check the box below before you proceed, Thunderbird will do this automatically in the future and not ask again.”
I would also argue that it could be really useful to include a link, such as
You can find more details here:
https://support.mozilla.org/en-US/kb/compacting-folders
or for the German localization
https://support.mozilla.org/de/kb/ordner-komprimieren
So may be a new bug should be filed with the title “misleading text for compact folder message should be corrected”.

And the text for the check box should be:
“Do this automatically in the future and don’t ask again”
FYI:
The current (misleading or unclear) text for the message reads as follows:
„The messages you have deleted can be purged from disk. This operation will save about 208 MB of disk space. Select the option below to let Thunderbird do this automatically without asking you.
<Checkbox>: Remove message deletions automatically and do not ask me“

I have filed a bug to change/improve/clarify the English text for compact folders dialog box bug 1717455
So, if the English text will be changed / clarified, then the improvement should trickle down to the respective localizations.
