Details

User Agent: Mozilla/5.0 (Macintosh; Intel Mac OS X 10.15; rv:89.0) Gecko/20100101 Firefox/89.0

Steps to reproduce:

Before Firefox 89 one could find a native MacOS "Share" feature in the Page Actions in the address bar (and pin it as an always shown action)

Actual results:

In Firefox 89 the native MacOS "Share" feature is nowhere to be found, yet I can't find a reference that says that it was intended to be removed.

Expected results:

I expected to find a toolbar button or a setting or something that enables me to still use the native MacOS "Share" feature in Firefox 89.

Is it not in the tab context menu?

I can't find a reference that says that it was intended to be removed.

The Page Actions menu was intentionally removed in bug 1691454. Page action buttons now appear directly on the address bar, with the exception of actions that are available in other buttons or menus, to avoid clutter.

The Bugbug bot thinks this bug should belong to the 'Core::Widget: Cocoa' component, and is moving the bug to that component. Please revert this change in case you think the bot is wrong.

Is it not in the tab context menu?

Yes, it is. Didn't know it moved there.

Martin, you provided some context on this to the team. Is there anything actionable on our side, or should this be closed as wontfix?

Is it not in the tab context menu?

It is! I have looked everywhere for it, except in that very place.

The Page Actions menu was intentionally removed in bug 1691454.

Yeah, I was referring to the MacOS "Share" when I said it wasn't "intended to be removed",

Page action buttons now appear directly on the address bar, with the exception of actions that are available in other buttons or menus, to avoid clutter.

I guess this is the "regression" for me here then, that before it was accessible through the address bar, but now – unlike any of the other actions(?) – it has moved to the tab context menu, which is a totally different place.

Safari provides this functionality as a toolbar button, whereas Chrome provides it through the menu "File > Share" (something that one can find by searching for "Share" in the "Help" menu of the app in MacOS).

Is it possible for an extension to trigger this menu? That way I could make an extension that adds this back for me. Else such a button would need to be added in Firefox itself.

Hello I have managed to reproduce the issue with Firefox 87.0a1 (2021-02-09), indeed the native macOS share is present in the address bar, and with firefox 89.0 it was moved to the tabs context menu.

Marking this issue as NEW for better tracking for the developers and the QA also.

Thank you and have a nice day!

Status: UNCONFIRMED → NEW
Ever confirmed: true

We have a patch in progress to bring the "Share" option to the File menu in bug 1512851. I think this bug gives a bit more context.

There is no point keeping this open separately from bug 1512851. We're not bringing back the page action menu item for the share item as it was originally, so the only way this is getting "fixed" is through 1512851.

I would say that 1717290 is indeed the one that would resolve this one for me, to again get a button in or besides the URL bar.
