RESOLVED DUPLICATE of bug 1724617

Details

(Whiteboard: [fxperf])

User Agent: Mozilla/5.0 (Windows NT 6.1; Win64; x64; rv:92.0) Gecko/20100101 Firefox/92.0

Steps to reproduce:

On two Win7-64 computers, updated Firefox from previous version to 92.0.

Actual results:

When I click "Bookmarks" on the Firefox toolbar, the drop-down list containing my bookmark folders appears normally. When I hover over a bookmark folder that contains hundreds of bookmarks, the bookmark list flies out to the right and its first 70 bookmark names appear immediately (70 fit onto my screen), but their icons appear gradually one at a time beginning at the top, taking a couple seconds for all 70 icons to appear, then Firefox freezes (and one CPU core is running 100%) for several more seconds depending on how many more bookmarks exist below the first 70 that fit onto my screen.

After observing the slow rendering of one bookmark folder, if I exit the bookmark menu and reenter it, that same bookmark folder now renders much faster, as if the slow icons have been cached. If I restart Firefox, all the sluggish behavior repeats.

I observed the sluggishness on my Win7 machine after updating to 92.0. My colleague then updated his Firefox to 92.0, and now sees the same sluggish behavior.

Possibly relevant: Both computers have Firefox Favicons disabled (we don't like them), so all of our bookmark icons resemble small globes. Also, both computers use Windows Classic desktop theme, not Aero theme.

Expected results:

I expected the Bookmark menu folders to fly out and render almost instantly as they have done in all prior Firefox versions.

The Bugbug bot thinks this bug should belong to the 'Firefox::Toolbars and Customization' component, and is moving the bug to that component. Please revert this change in case you think the bot is wrong.

Hey norbinz,
If possible, could you test this issue on the nightly build? Download the build from : https://www.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/nightly/all/ .

Hi Andrei,
I see the same sluggish bookmarks icons in the 94.0a1 nightly build.

How I installed the nightly: I ran the 94.0a1 installer in a new Sandboxie sandbox, launched it, used Customize Toolbars to add the Menu Bar to the top of Firefox, clicked menu Bookmarks and then "Manage Bookmarks", then used "Import and Backup" to restore one of my bookmark JSON backups from my old Firefox profile.

Interesting: When I browse my large bookmark folders from within "Manage Bookmarks", the long lists and icons render very fast. However when I close "Manage Bookmarks" and click menu Bookmarks, the large fly-out bookmark folders render the icons very slowly, just like in Firefox 92.0.

I tried changing my desktop theme to an Aero theme but that didn't affect the sluggish bookmark icons.

Hi Alice0775 White,
I too see the highlight lag as described in 1725629 and 1724617, also beginning with FIrefox 92.0, although I didn't mention it in my bug report. For me, the highlight lag occurs every time I drop-down the Bookmarks menu, not merely the first time after launching Firefox. It occurs in both Windows Classic Theme and Aero themes.

During the slow icon rendering and lagging highlight, Task Manager shows them consuming approximately one CPU core, so I wonder if maybe they are no longer being hardware accelerated. Just a wild guess.

I installed FF 94.0 and the problem is gone. Yay!
Thank you.
