RESOLVED DUPLICATE of bug 928365

People

Details

(Keywords: ux-control)

User Agent: Mozilla/5.0 (Windows NT 10.0; Win64; x64) AppleWebKit/537.36 (KHTML, like Gecko) Chrome/93.0.4577.63 Safari/537.36

Steps to reproduce:

I pressed Esc key in the message list.

Actual results:

Quick Filter Bar disappeared

Expected results:

It's not intuitive that Quick Filter Bar is hidden when user pressess Esc key (by accident).
I saw myself many times re-enabling the toolbar via Menu after pressing Esc key by accident.
I know that "Ctrl + Shift + K" can reenable the toolbar quickly and I also consider acceptable that the Esc key may hide the toolbar if it was opened using the keys shortcut (as if it where a dialog or input prompt window).
But I don't find intuitive (specially for new users) that the Esc key closes the Toolbar if it was enabled via menu, because this way it's not a dialog but a toolbar that is supposed to stay there, no matter if the user pressed Esc key.

PS: I don't know why the user tends to press the Esc key. Maybe he tries to do something different.

Thank you Christopher, good points!
This has been raised before, obviously useful, and I've proposed a simple solution in bug 928365, comment 6.

I pressed Esc key in the message list.

More precisely, you pressed ESC one more time after all the quick filters were already cleared.

But I don't find intuitive (specially for new users) that the Esc key closes the Toolbar if it was enabled via menu, because this way it's not a dialog but a toolbar that is supposed to stay there, no matter if the user pressed Esc key.

I don't think we could or should create a difference between the menu and the keyboard shortcut, but we should certainly provide a way to make quick filter bar not go away on ESC.

PS: I don't know why the user tends to press the Esc key. Maybe he tries to do something different.

Does "the user" happen to be in an enterprise context? If yes, can you elaborate a bit why they'd prefer their quick filter bar to stay around and not go away easily?
