User Agent: Mozilla/5.0 (Windows NT 10.0; Win64; x64; rv:92.0) Gecko/20100101 Firefox/92.0

Steps to reproduce:

Thunderbird auto-updated from 78.14 to 91.1.1 yesterday. I'm using Thunderbird to access a Gmail account via IMAP. Everything was working fine in version 78, but now if I receive multiple new messages in my inbox, read one and delete it, then open another message, the one I just deleted will reappear in the inbox.

Actual results:

As an example, this morning I had two unread messages when I started up Thunderbird. I read the first one and deleted it. When I opened the second one, the first one reappeared in the inbox. When I deleted the second message, and then deleted the first message again, the second message reappeared. Deleting second message caused the first message to reappear again. This went back and forth a few times before they stopped reappearing.

This only seems to happen when there are more than one new/unread messages in the inbox. Receiving a single new message and reading/deleting it doesn't cause the issue.

This is probably related as this didn't happen with Thunderbird 78 either; there is a 1-2 second delay from when I delete a message before it is removed from the message list. It's during this delay when the old deleted message reappears.

Expected results:

It should work like it did in Thunderbird 78. The message should be deleted and not come back, and there should be no delay.

Jim has reported this at https://support.mozilla.org/en-US/questions/1351671

I haven't seen this in my many gmail accounts.

This behavior affects all imap, not just gmail, and it definitely started with the upgrade to 91.x.x. The reappearance of deleted messages is mostly random, but seems to happen more often when messages are deleted with the [Del] key or either of the [Delete] buttons on the message window. It does seem the [Delete] button on the main TB window successfully deletes messages more often than the others, but not always.

This bug is not WAN or remote MX server related. The failure occurs on my local server, which is three feet away.

Changing the duration of local message caching does not affect the bug.

Previous TB bugs of this type were related to having no Trash folder. This could be a regurgitation of that same bug, as none of my imap accounts have trash folders enabled. My wife has not reported this bug and she has trash folders for all her accounts.

Whatever this is about, it must be rare. Without more data, not much we can do here.
