User Agent: Mozilla/5.0 (Macintosh; Intel Mac OS X 10.15; rv:95.0) Gecko/20100101 Firefox/95.0
Steps to reproduce:
Preferences "Automatically mark messages as read" is unchecked. Occurs if I click on (or use arrow bars to scroll to) a new, unread message header, on at least one account of 3 gmail accounts.
Actual results:
Immediately changes to read, even when message is not "opened"
Expected results:
Status should remain unread until opened (e.g. with double click), or replied to, forwarded, etc.

I did some basic troubleshooting (restarted several times in troubleshooting mode, played with setting each time) and followed all suggestions in this thread: https://support.mozilla.org/en-US/questions/1352966

I'm not able to reproduce using 94.0b2 on Windows 10.
This is with a new test profile?

Hi All,
I did this with a new profile (not sure what "test profile" means exactly, I just deleted my existing profile, reinstalled TB, and tried setup again. Thanks!

Nope, it's still here but intermittent. Seems to be in certain folders/imap accounts but not others. I totally deleted everything thunderbird yesterday, Installed TB 94.0b2 from a fresh download, created a new profile with the profile manager from Mozilla, and added my three gmail IMAP accounts again.
This is a duplicate of Bug 1734825. Same issue. I posted a video of the behavior: https://bugzilla.mozilla.org/attachment.cgi?id=9245553. Please let me know if there is anything I can do to help.
