User Agent: Mozilla/5.0 (Windows NT 10.0; Win64; x64; rv:93.0) Gecko/20100101 Firefox/93.0

Steps to reproduce:

use the program

Actual results:

when new messages arrive, the message count (aka badge) shown on the taskbaris incorrect.

This just began recently, when I upgraded Thunderbird to V91.2.1,
before that, the message count wasn't even shown on taskbar.

Expected results:

the new-message count should agree with the number of new messages

Reporter,

Do you still see this when using version 102?

Whiteboard: [closeme 2022-11-15]

Yes, still seeing this in version 102.4.1 (64-bit). See attached image.
In this case, there are 5 new messages, but count indicates 6.
Most commonly I'll have 1 new message, but count will indicate 2.

Further update on this:
Since posting my previous responses, I've received 3 more email messages...
In each case, there was 1 new email, but Tbird taskbar icon showed 2 ...

The count in your screen shot is Inbox within Local Folders, which could only happen if messages are filtered to that Inbox.

Is this correct?

Yes, it is. I actually have two accounts, but both send messages to the same Inbox, the one shown in these images.

Just for completeness, note that V102.6.0 still has this issue; this is my status this morning:

Okay, let me offer an alternate request...

Since this display option does not work at all, could we please have an option to disable it entirely??
As it exists, it is truly pointless...

You have the option in Thunderbird settings to not have counts displayed.
If you are asking that we disable the feature because it is broken, that's an odd concept. We don't do that.

Summary: taskbar message count is wrong → Windows taskbar message count in badge is wrong

I've had a similar issue for years. I use an external application to filter my inbox, that is, to move or remove messages from my inbox. Here are the steps of my scenario in chronological order:

  1. Thunderbird is notified that the inbox on the IMAP server contains a new message.
  2. Filter app is notified that the inbox on the IMAP server contains a new message.
  3. Thunderbird downloads the message to the local inbox.
  4. Thunderbird increases the badge counter. If the counter was 0 and the badge wasn't showing, it is displayed as 1.
  5. Filter app applies its rules and moves or removes the message from the inbox on the IMAP server.
  6. Thunderbird is notified that the message has been removed from the inbox on the IMAP server and removes the message from the local inbox.

But: Thunderbird does not decrease the badge counter in this scenario, which leads to the wrong count. If the inbox does not contain unread messages, then the badge counter should be at 0 and the badge should disappear.

Okay, permit me to revisit this topic... I have been reporting this issue for over two years now, but it does not appear to be getting any attention at all, and the message counts are completely wrong - still...

Here is an image of my current unread messages from a few minutes ago, and the taskbar/badge counter shown as well...
Note that the number of unread messages is 7, and the count displayed in the taskbar is 12.

Could this be set as an active, acknowledged bug, and maybe finally get fixed???
