Details

User Agent: Mozilla/5.0 (X11; Ubuntu; Linux x86_64; rv:94.0) Gecko/20100101 Firefox/94.0

Steps to reproduce:

When composing a new email, if you type a word that's not in the dictionary into the email subject, then type the same word in the email body, then right click on the word in the email body and select "Add to dictionary", the wavy red warning line disappears from the word in the email body, but not from the same word in the email subject.

Expected results:

The wavy red line should disappear from the word in the subject.

Did you select the word in the Subject after adding it to the dictionary in the message body?

The red line disappeared for me when I did that.

Tested with 91.2.1 from Fedora and the 91.3.0 from Thunderbird on Fedora 34.0, Gnome 40 desktop.

Yes, the red line disappears when I click on the word in the subject. It shouldn't be necessary to do this though. The red line should disappear as soon as the word is added to the dictionary.

Did it in previous versions?

The problem did indeed occur in previous versions. I've been meaning to report this problem for a while now. I don't know whether clicking on the word in the subject had the same effect in previous versions.

What is the reason you don't add it to the dictionary when noticing it misspelled in the Subject line?

Then it will be corrected in the message body.

Works for me.

Maybe I just didn't notice at the time.

Are you saying that the current behaviour is correct?

The current behavior is correct to me.

If I misspell a word in the Subject and body, then add it to the dictionary in the body, it is updated when I return to the Subject.

If I misspell a word in the Subject and body, then add it to the dictionary in the Subject, it is not updated in the body until I return to the body to begin typing again.

I also tested this with a 78 version I had in my testing account.

It's most definitely not correct for the red line to disappear from all the matching words in the body of the email, but not disappear from matching words in the subject.

Correcting it in the subject line does not automatically correct it in the message body, until you return to the body.

Correcting it in the body does not automatically correct it in the subject line, until you return to the subject line.

If that doesn't explain it clearly, try it yourself.

Then that's a bug too.

Okay, I'm not sure how to select Thunderbird as a version in the Spelling checker component of the shared Firebox Core product, but if a bug exists that is where it should be filed. IMHO.

I don't believe this issue can be fixed by spell checker. I suspect it's fundamentally a TB issue, in that spell check isn't doing both subject and body at the same time.

Anyway, this is already reported as bug 433181
