User Agent: Mozilla/5.0 (Windows NT 10.0; Win64; x64; rv:94.0) Gecko/20100101 Firefox/94.0

Steps to reproduce:

I'm not sure if this is a Firefox or Reddit bug, but it works in Edge and in Chrome, it's broken in Firefox only.

All these bugs are only with comments/replies, not when creating a new topic/post.

To reproduce:
1.

  • create a test post - comment/reply to this topic, with this text - type it, don't copy it:one two three four five
  • select and copy "five"
  • move a cursor between "one" and "two"
  • paste with Ctrl+V or context menu
  • text is NOT copied
  • after all steps from bug #1 press Ctrl+Z to undo
  • text is broken like this:

iacw5nru19v71.webp

  • create a test post - comment/reply to this topic, with this text - type it, don't copy it:one two three four five
  • select and copy whole text
  • delete whole text
  • press Ctrl+V to paste text
  • text is not pasted
  • create a test post - comment/reply to this topic, with this text - type it, don't copy it:one two three four five
  • select "two" and assign any link to it, e.g. link from the address bar
  • copy the text "two" with link
  • press Home key
  • press Ctrl+V to paste
  • part of the text is lost and word wrap is added to first word

(I'll add screenshot below, if possible)

  • use all steps from issue #4
  • click to markdown mode
  • first row with text "two" with link is lost

Actual results:

There are possibly other similar issues, text is lost, truncated, changed when copying, pasting, deleting a text often.

Expected results:

Firefox 94.0.1 (64-bit), Windows 10 21H1 64-bit.

The Bugbug bot thinks this bug should belong to the 'Core::DOM: Selection' component, and is moving the bug to that component. Please revert this change in case you think the bot is wrong.

Component: Untriaged → DOM: Selection

Looks a duplicate of bug 1713831.

Looks a duplicate of bug 1713831.

This bug is more complex, I reported 5 different scenarios, link I provided has reply with 7 reports, it's not just that paste does not work, even existing text is lost sometime.

Anyway, all these bugs make using reddit in Firefox almost unusable.

Thomas, could you check?

This is the same DraftJS issue I diagnosed in bug 1739489 and https://webcompat.com/issues/91682#issuecomment-956462866

Until we figure out the related interop issues with contenteditable (or Reddit/DraftJS decide to support Firefox in the meantime), the only work arounds I'm aware of for Reddit users are to use old.reddit.com or an addon such as Reddit Enhancement Suite, to avoid their DraftJS editor.

For now we might as well choose a single bug to dupe these reports against (or perhaps file move them all under a meta-bug).

We appreciate your report. I was not able to reproduce the issue. After going through all the scenarios, I was able to successfully submit the copied text, use the feature CTRZ-Z, assign a link to a text, etc

Tested with:

Browser / Version: Firefox Nightly 98.0a1 (2022-01-12) (64-bit)
Operating System: Windows 10 PRO x64

Suggestion: Try clearing cache/data/cookies, disable add-ons and Ad-blocker (if available) and extensions or use a clean profile, and check again? If there are any changes made to the default settings of the browser (e.g. in about: config) please revert to the default settings and try again. Also, have the required cookies been accepted for this page? Is the issue reproducible on the latest build of Firefox Nightly?

Thanks for the reply, lot of users reported these bugs, I tried it again in the private window - all addons are disabled, had to accepts the cookies, it's the same there, not fixed.

Perhaps it was fixed in the latest Firefox version, is it public - and is the portable version available?

Currently using Firefox 96.0 (64-bit), Windows 10 21H1 64-bit.

Firefox Nightly is available to download here: https://www.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/channel/desktop/. Scrolling the page, it is located just under the Developer Edition. Could you please test the issue using this build of Nightly? Also, does the issue reproduce in both Normal and Private browsing modes?

Thanks, I'd like to test, I downloaded it, but the text is "Firefox nightly has been installed before. Let's get you a new copy. Restore default settings and remove old add-ons for optimal performance - Re-Install"

I don't want to lose my current settings, is it save to install that Nightly version and should I check that option ("Restore default settings...")?

BTW Can you reproduce it? Here are very easy steps to get the result as on the first screenshot:

  • login to reddit
  • click within the reply field
  • type "test 1 2 3"
  • select "3"
  • ctrl+c
  • move a cursor between "1" and "2"
  • ctrl+v
  • ctrl+z
  • ctrl+z

OK, in 96.0.1 (64-bit) the steps are the same, just need to use ctrl+z 5 times, not 2 times, result is the same, as on the first screenshot.

Could you please test the issue using the latest build of Firefox Nightly?

It's still broken in 98.0a1 (2022-01-17) (64-bit), default settings, no addons.

Reporter, is this similar to the issue that you are facing? https://bugzilla.mozilla.org/show_bug.cgi?id=1713831

It is similar, just I think my steps to reproduce are more accurately.

It's possible to paste some text, from Notepad for example.

BTW It's in the first post, but it's important:

"All these bugs are only with comments/replies, not when creating a new topic/post."

I can still reproduce these Reddit bugs in Firefox 100.

I was also able to reproduce the very first scenario using the latest build of Firefox Nightly, when signed into my test account:

https://prnt.sc/jCcjlfu3KbSe

Tested with:

Browser / Version: Firefox Release 100.0 (64-bit)/ Firefox Nightly 102.0a1 (2022-05-17) (64-bit)
Operating System: Windows 10 PRO x64

Notes:

  1. Reproducible regardless of the status of ETP.
  2. Reproducible on the latest build of Firefox Nightly and Release.
  3. Works as expected using Chrome

A workaround is to switch the editor to Markdown Mode. That can be done selectively, or can be set to default in Reddit User Settings > Feed Settings > Default to markdown: https://www.reddit.com/settings/feed

Whiteboard: [WORKAROUND IN COMMENT 21]

The issue is still reproducible.

Tested with:

Browser / Version: Firefox Nightly 111.0a1 (2023-01-27) (64-bit)
Operating System: Windows 10 PRO x64

Notes:

  1. Reproducible regardless of the status of ETP.
  2. Reproducible on the latest build of Firefox Nightly and Release.
  3. Works as expected using Chrome.
